Inclusive Pedagogy Series

The Teaching Academy serves as an exceptional graduate and post-doctoral fellow professional development program. Our mission is twofold: to support the learning experiences for undergraduates by training graduate student teachers; and to prepare graduate students so they may thrive in higher education as academic professionals once they graduate. The Teaching Academy offers Ph.D students and post-doctoral fellows from all divisions across Johns Hopkins University, college teacher training and academic career preparation opportunities through courses, workshops, teaching practicums, teaching as research fellowship appointments and individual consultation. The Teaching Academy is located in the Center for Educational Resources (CER) in the Garrett Room of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library on the Homewood campus.

For JHU graduates students and postdocs interested in future teaching professions.

Many instructors believe that inclusive teaching is a worthy ideal. But while inclusive intentions are a helpful place to start, instructors often lack the training and resources they need to actualize equitable learning environments for all students. This series is designed to grow your competence and confidence around teaching for access, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. In Week 1, we'll survey the most up-to-date research on inclusive teaching from the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. We'll also identify concrete strategies for applying this research to our current or future teaching practice. In Week 2, we'll investigate emerging problems from the field of inclusive teaching that center on the question: "Is inclusive teaching a personal choice or a professional responsibility?" We'll also consider the implications of these responsibilities for our current or future teaching practice. This series is designed to benefit those new to inclusive teaching as well as those conversant with the field. The series will be facilitated by Michael McCreary, a 6th year PhD student in the humanities at JHU and part-time Graduate Associate at the Center for Educational Resources. When: Four-session series runs from Wednesday, March 16 to Friday, March 25Location: Online via ZoomRegistration: Open to grad students and postdocs. Please register separately at link below. We'll discuss competing claims about the scope of our responsibility to our students and interrogate the various implications of these claims. We'll also discuss some forms of legal responsibility around access and accessibility.Friday, March 25th, 2-3 PM ESTFear Belongs in the ClassroomTalk and open Q&A with Michael McCreary on instructors' responsibility for addressing fear and anxiety in the classroom. While many teachers seek to engage students' positive emotions such as enjoyment, excitement, and interest, most tend to steer clear of negative emotions like fear, anxiety, and self-doubt. This talk provides strategies for "teaching the whole student" by bringing fear into the classroom in a non-therapeutic way. We'll look particularly at the case of so-called "Imposter Syndrome," which involves the fear that students' differences mean they don't really belong in the learning environment. The session will also discuss professional practices for bringing the instructor's own fears and anxieties into the academic context.-----------------This session is open to Johns Hopkins graduate and doctoral students, as well as post-doctoral fellows. This workshop counts towards the completion of Phase I in the Teaching Academy's Certificate of Completion program. Regarding online workshops, please note active participation is expected for the duration of the workshop if you would like Phase I credit.
