It’s in our genes,” James Jr. said, particularly crediting his father for showing him his artistic ways when he was about 4 years old. His father, Doug James, is a Klein ISD school board member who is running for reelection but also owns a marketing and graphic design company. James Jr. started with the basic by coloring outside of the lines, then he started drawing figures similar to the ones he watched in Dragon Ball Z. In elementary and middle school he started to spread his wings, branching into different characters and conceptual art based on his experiences growing up in Houston, and in high school he stepped into graphic design, learning how to us Premiere College Preparatory, has been honing in on graphic design and practicing that skill for the last 10 years, he said, “just waiting to see if anyone would recognize my work.” He got his first “big break” when Spike Lee called him and bought a piece he did of Denzel Washington’s portrayal of Bleak Gilliam in the film Mo’ Better Blues. “He loved that piece and said ‘hey I need to buy that from you,’ “James Jr. said. “I was doing back flips in my mind.” After his artwork caught the eye of a prominent celebrity, his thought process turned to “now that I’ve done this how am I going to be able to reach out to people of great status?” The answer? Started figuring out where the stars would be so he could hand-deliver pieces and …As and avid listener of hip-hop, especially while he’s painting or creating, many of his pieces highlight affluent music artists in the genre or affluent political leaders and other notable figures in the Black community. Ever since the sixth grade, James Jr. has admired Jean-Michel Basquiat, a Neo-Expressionist painter in the 1980s who is best known for his primitive style and his collaboration with pop artists Andy Warhol. “A lot of abstract, childlike, very aggressive, “James Jr. said Basquiat’s art. “He actually painted his experiences and that’s what art is all about.” His favorite quote from him: “While I’m working, I don’t think about art, I think about life.” - Monique Welsh, Houston Chronicle
