Two Centuries of Exploration, Adventure and Enterprise in NY’s Cave Country

Join Cobleskill author Dana Cudmore as he shares a few of his favorite tales from his new book, Underground Empires: Two Centuries of Exploration, Adventure, and Enterprise in New York’s Cave Country. Dana’s program will be available “in-person” and also on Zoom on Monday, March 14th at 7 PM. The in-person location is at the Sharon Springs Free Public Library Community Room at 129 Main Street in Sharon Springs. 

Cudmore’s 2021 book, published by Black Dome Press of Catskill, explores the wonder and drama in the history of the area’s caves. It is an intriguing, surprising, sometimes humorous, and very human look back at the explorers and entrepreneurs that have made the caves and cave country part of their lives, and ours as well.

With numerous historical photos, Cudmore’s program will provide an interesting and entertaining program that describes the hidden backstories of the area’s most famous caves and the long-forgotten attempts to open several others. The audience will learn about the time the reigning Miss America ceremoniously opened a Schoharie cave to the public and recall the world’s only “Underground Duck Race.” He includes an account of the Blenheim Monster Serpent, which crawled from its mountain lair in the early 1800s.

Cudmore will also cover the related 150-year history of the cement and stone industry in Howes Cave, which profits from the area’s unique geology.
