Women in Wine (Free Panel Discussion)

In honor of Women's History Month, we present a panel of women in the wine industry discussing issues pertaining to females in the industry.

March is Women&#x27;s History Month. Boston University Programs in Food &amp; Wine will be presenting a panel discussion, Women in Wine, on March 29. Four experienced members of the wine industry will join forces to discuss their experiences of working in a male-dominated field. How have they overcome challenges? How have they seen the industry progress throughout their careers? What advice would they give to those wishing to enter the field? Join us as we discuss the future of women in the wine industry. This is a free online panel discussion. This event will be moderated by Suhayl Ramirez. Suhayl has over 15 years experience in retail, craft food, and tech. She was the first ever recipient of the Urban Grape Wine Studies Award for Students of Color. Currently, Suhayl is working as a Customer Engagement Officer at Trois Noix. Information on PanelistsJacquelyn Groeper: Jacquelyn Groeper, an alumna of Boston University, is the co-owner and winemaker of Artis Winery in Pembroke, Massachusetts. After completing the Boston University Wine Studies Program, she attained accreditation as a Certified Specialist in Wine (CSW) from the Society of Wine Educators. Jacquelyn furthered her education in enology at the University of California Davis, graduated from the Washington State University Enology Certificate Program, and is currently enrolled in Washington State’s Viticultural Program. Her travels allow her to explore various wine regions and expand her understanding of different grape varieties, terroirs, and winemaking techniques. Jacquelyn is an instructor at Boston University&#x27;s Elizabeth Bishop Wine Resource Center. Beth Ann Dahan: A Certified Specialist in Wine (CSW), Beth Ann Dahan has earned diplomas from the Elizabeth Bishop Wine Resource Center and Le Cordon Bleu in London, as well as an MBA from Northeastern University. She previously owned a Boston-area café and catering business, and is now the director of Vela Wines, a company that produces and imports wines from the Central Otago region of New Zealand, where she owns a vineyard with her husband and business partner. Beth Ann is an instructor at Boston University&#x27;s Elizabeth Bishop Wine Resource Center. Alicia Towns Franken: With over 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Alicia Towns Franken has taken on the role of VP Wine Portfolio at Archer Roose. After having spent the last several years as a sought-after event planner and wine consultant, she is now focused on growing the Archer Roose product portfolio and creating an industry-focused program. In addition, Alicia continues to participate in seminars, tasting and panel discussions in the wine industry around the country. Alicia serves on the board and also heads mentorship at Wine Unify, a non-profit organization who’s mission is to welcome, elevate, and amplify the voices of underrepresented minorities in the wine industry.Hadley Douglas: Along with her husband, TJ Douglas, Hadley Douglas co-founded The Urban Grape, a six-time Best of Boston winning wine, beer, and spirits store in Boston. UG is the only store in the country to use our proprietary Progressive Scale, a system of categorizing wine by its body, instead of by varietal or region. Their philosophy of #DrinkProgressively also refers to their desire to make space in the wine industry for previously marginalized groups such as BIPOC, Woman, and LGBTQ+ producers. The Urban Grape Wine Studies Award for Students of Color provides education, paid work experience, and mentorship to BIPOC seeking engaging careers in the wine industry.
