The KBN meetings are back, featuring two fantastic talks! The Thames Landscape Strategy will do a presentation on their exciting Rewilding Arcadia Project and the organisation Forest Research will present on the important role of social sciences in tree pest and disease research, with examples from the Oak Processionary Moths.Presentation 1: Rewilding Arcadia





Talk overview: By its very nature, the Arcadian Thames should be resilient to flooding, however, previous land use decisions have seen much of the wildness of the floodplain lost through historic modifications. As a result, the floodplain’s capacity to function during a flood has been greatly reduced. To a large extent, the loss of the natural floodplain has not been a problem, climate change however, has altered the balance. The river is reclaiming its lost floodplain back; putting, heritage and wildlife at threat as flood risk increases.



‘Rewilding Arcadia’ is a new project from the Thames Landscape Strategy to deliver and explain a series of nature-based flood management projects designed to restore the lost floodplain. By adopting this approach, water, people, heritage and wildlife can be re-connected with the natural cycles of the Thames – whether in normal times, during a flood or a drought.



·Our speaker Laura Nee has recently joined the Thames Landscape Strategy as Partnership, Outreach and Education Officer for the Rewilding Arcadia project. She has a background in river restoration and community engagement, having delivered several nature-based river restoration projects with Thames21 in urban rivers throughout London.
