Quatuor pour la fin du temps: A Concert Experience at UH West O'ahu

A Chamber Music Hawaiʻi concert, organized in conjunction with the Americans and the Holocaust exhibition, which is currently at UHWO.

University of Hawaiʻi – West Oʻahu

<p>The community will be able to experience the power and indomitability of the human spirit through music that was composed and performed in the horrific conditions of Stalag VIII-A, a German camp. This special performance, by professional musicians from Chamber Music Hawaiʻi, will feature French composer Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time). Messiaen joined the French Army in 1939 to fight alongside the Allies during WWII. In May 1940 he was captured at Verdun by the Germans, and became a prisoner-of-war in Stalag VIII-A, a German camp. A sympathetic German prison guard, Carl-Albert Brüll, helped him obtain music manuscript paper and pencils, and encouraged him to compose. In January 1941, under freezing conditions, fellow prisoners of war cellist Étienne Pasquier, clarinetist Henri Akoka, and violinist Jean le Boulaire joined Messiaen to perform the new work for an audience of fellow prisoners and prison guards. The story of Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps would become famous as an act of defiance and bravery in the face of powerful oppression. This special event will conclude with a visit to the Campbell Library’s traveling exhibition, “Americans and the Holocaust,” and mark its pending departure from Hawaiʻi.</p><p>The exhibition will be open on Saturday, March 5 from 10am-7:30pm. <a href="https://westoahu.libcal.com/calendar?cid=16198&amp;t=g&amp;d=0000-00-00&amp;cal=16198&amp;inc=0" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Reservations</a> must be made for visitors hoping to see the exhibition between 10am-4:30pm. After 4:30pm, walk-ins are acceptable. The program will begin at 5pm. <h2>About the Musicians</h2><h3>Sung Chan Chang</h3><p>Sung Chan Chang, started playing the cello when he was 7 years old. He was accepted to the Seoul Ye-Won Art School with prestigious honors in 2001, and the Juilliard Pre-College as a scholarship student in 2002. He graduated from The Korean National University of Arts with the Bachelor of Music degree in 2008, The Juilliard School with the Master of Music degree in 2010, Yale University with the Artist Diploma degree in 2012, Northwestern University with the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 2020, and is currently serving as Acting Principal cellist at Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.</p><p><a href="http://www.sungchanchang.com/BIOGRAPHY.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Full profile</a></p><h3><a href="http://www.sungchanchang.com/BIOGRAPHY.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a><a href="https://www.galliardsq.com/members/sung-chan-chang-cello" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a>Jonathan Korth</h3><p>Pianist Jonathan Korth, enjoys a multifaceted career as a soloist, chamber musician, collaborator, and teacher. Hailed by the Des Moines Register as having “prodigious technique and  keen sense of musicianship,” Dr Korth’s sizable presence piques the audience’s attention and delivers with the satisfyingly deep and colorful sound he has become known for. Dr. Korth is a prolific concertizer, with performances not only in Bangkok, Beijing, Brussels, London, Shanghai, Seoul, and Tokyo, but also in prized stateside venues like Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall. With the advent of the pandemic, he’s reimagined his live performances and played/co-produced regular online concerts from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa’s Music Department where he’s been a piano faculty member since 2008.</p><p><a href="https://manoa.hawaii.edu/music/about-us/faculty/jonathan-korth/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Full faculty profile</a></p><h3>James Moffitt</h3><p>Jim is the Associate Principal and Bass Clarinetist with the HSO, having served many seasons as Acting Principal Clarinetist.  He has been a member of the Spring Wind Quintet since 1986 and served two seasons as Acting Assistant Principal and E-Flat Clarinet with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. He has performed, toured and recorded with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Winds. A former member of the Alabama Symphony, he performed with the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra for 10 seasons and has also performed with the Colorado Symphony, Aspen Music Festival, Britt Festival, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and La Jolla Summerfest.
