National Invasive Species Awareness Week 2022  “What’s so wrong about English Ivy and other Invasive Plant Species?”

Climate Action Coffee and the City of Takoma Park invite you to join us for a virtual panel discussion and Q &amp; A on invasive plant species.The March 1st, 2022 event will be held 12:00 - 1:30pm. Featured speakers Corinne Stephens, Sara Tangren, Jesse Buff, and Lily Fountain will provide an overview of invasive plant species in our region, why we care about them, how to identify them -- and what you can do to remove them. Updates about what Maryland is doing at the legislative level to curb the spread of invasive plants will be followed by a question and answer forum. Schedule:12-12:10- Intro to program, speakers and the role of the Vegetation Maintenance Supervisor for the City of Takoma Park- Anna Mische John12:10-12:30- Intro to local invasive plant species, what they are and why they are a problem, how to identify common invasive species, what Montgomery Parks and the Weed Warriors program are doing to curtail their growth- Corinne Stephens, Montgomery Parks12:30-12:45- Early detection of new Invasive plants-Help stop new invasive weeds from becoming the next Kudzu. Early response is critical to defending our natural areas from being invaded by new problem species. Sara will outline species that are currently being monitored for potential establishment in our region.Sara Tangren, National Capital PRISM 12:45-1:00- CCANs role in removing invasive species in Takoma Park- Jesse Buff, CCAN1:00-1:10- Sierra Clubs work on House Bill 15 - Classification, Listing, Use and Sales and Use Tax- Lily Fountain, MD Sierra Club1:10-1:30- Wrap up Anna Mische John, Q &amp; A- moderated by Marguerite CyrSpeakers:Corinne Stephens, Senior Natural Resources Specialist, oversees the Montgomery Parks Weed Warrior Volunteer Program that empowers and trains community members to help Montgomery Parks staff manage non-native, invasive plants on parkland. She also coordinates efforts amongst volunteers and advocacy groups for stewardship in parks. Corinne has over 18 years of experience in partnership building, community engagement, volunteer management, and wildlife habitat conservation. She joined Montgomery Parks from the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, where she spent 4 years working on a volunteer trash clean-up program and used her knowledge of corporate environmental stewardship to develop and manage a program that grew sustainability initiatives and employee volunteerism within the business community throughout the Chesapeake region. Corinne has been a lifelong volunteer and was a past president of Friends of Sligo Creek. She holds a BS in animal science and environmental policy from Rutgers University and an MS in wildlife policy from Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. For her Master’s, she worked with the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife to document the exact locations and risk factors involved in turtle road mortality!Sara Tangren, Coordinator-National Capital PRISM (Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management). Sara is a practitioner, researcher, and educator who has worked with the flora of the Mid-Atlantic region for more than 30 years. As such, she remembers the days when she thought Japanese honeysuckle was our worst invasive plant and that our native mosquitoes, then simply referred to as mosquitoes, were annoying. She has worked as an environmental consultant, a native plant and seed producer, an extension agent, and a professional invasive plant slayer. She recently published articles on our state’s imperiled sundial lupines and on the results of a survey on native plant and seed use in the Eastern United States. Her degrees are from Stonybrook University (BA, Earth Science and MS, Marine Science) and the University of Maryland (PhD, Natural Resources).&quot;Jesse Buff, Volunteer Program Coordinator-Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN). Jesse leads CCAN’s Invasive Vine Removal Program. Before coming to CCAN, Jesse led volunteer programs at Rock Creek Conservancy. Prior to that, Jesse worked at the intersection of international conservation and development for much of his career. He has worked for international development companies, NGOs, and the federal government. His passion is working with communities to protect their natural resources. He has an MS in Natural Resources from the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and Environment and a BA from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. In his spare time, he enjoys birdwatching, cooking, and hiking with his dog and family.Lily Fountain, PhD, RN, Chair-Natural Places Committee-Maryland Sierra Club, Member-Executive Committee-Prince George’s Sierra Club Executive Committee. After retiring as an assistant professor of nursing at University of Maryland, Baltimore, Lily is now a volunteer leader with Maryland Sierra Club and works on legislative advocacy, environmental and ecological education, and leads outings to natural places.
