AGPS Intermediate Institute with Patricia Tollison, PhD - Moving into Relationship: Rediscovering Body Sense

The Austin Group Psychotherapy Society is an interdisciplinary organization of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and counselors who share a mutual commitment to continuing professional development and to excellence in the practice of group psychotherapy.Over the past decade, the Austin Group Psychotherapy Society (AGPS) has gained national recognition for the quality of our training opportunities and the warmth and enthusiasm of our members.AGPS trainings and social events are designed to mentor new professionals and students, expand the knowledge and clinical skills of all members, and enrich and rejuvenate established practitioners.

This intermediate institute begins from the premise that leaders and group members are trying to be in relationship, not out of them. The exploration of what encourages and what gets in the way of interpersonal connection will include the concept that the body remembers. Brief didactic discussion will lay the foundation for the learning experience of working in the moment as a member of a process group. Time for member communication about the leader’s role and the process will be scheduled throughout the day and a half.
What does Intermediate Institute mean? 
These sessions are designed for any licensed mental health professional with at least 3 years of professional practice and whom have either been in an Institute or on-going group themselves or leading a group for at least 6 months. There may be a mix between those newer to group practice as well as more experienced clinicians whom have been leading groups for many years.  There is no top range of experience for this group as it is intended to be a heterogeneous mix of experience levels.

Describe the significance of the horizontal transference in the interpersonal world of group therapy. 2. Explain the connection between central nervous system arousal and attachment strategies. 3. Observe his/her unique experience of the subjective emotional present.

Her earliest clinical training included leading groups with members with severe mental illness in Bryan, Texas. She counts those groups as her most benevolent teachers of the essential nature of authenticity as a group leader. In Austin, she was in a long-term training group with Scott Rutan, Ph.D., another stunningly excellent teacher. Patricia is also a writer; most recently her article “Brains to Brains: Nonconscious Communication in Group” was published in The Voice.
