Experts who work with personality disorders have long been aware of self states, but there is a large population of non personality disordered patients who nonetheless manifest self states. Most of these individuals suffered preverbal and/or relational trauma in their formative years. A common refrain when I embark on teaching this workshop is “I don’t have that kind of patient in my groups.” I will share a myriad of clinical examples and we will have an opportunity to share in small groups or dyads, whichever the group as a whole prefers. My goal is to teach you to listen with a different ear for the subtle signs of preverbal trauma and attachment distress so that you can better understand the struggles of your patients and help them develop secure attachment within your groups. We will also be tracking somatic experience very closely, because developmental trauma manifests in the body self. We will look at ways you can shift your intake process to find early clues to this kind of trauma. Many therapists report that this workshop unexpectedly stirs up their own preverbal issues. My hope is that they come to experience themselves with more self compassion.

<LI>Increase your awareness of your more subtly dissociative patients and the signs of disorganized attachments and chronic shock.</LI>
<LI>Understand these patients's fear of a breakdown, the importance of repairing a ‘shattering’ experience.</LI>
<LI>Learn the importance of tracking subtle somatic shifts and listening for preverbal material in enactments and dreams.</LI>
<LI>Be able to articulate the importance of doing a very thorough intake of new patients.</LI>
<LI>Understand the importance of educating clients about attachment, neurobiology and early trauma.</LI>

She has been in private practice since 1977 and has also served within outpatient and inpatient treatment facilities teaching, developing group therapy programs, and supervising. She currently works with children, adolescents, and adults in both individual and group therapy. She also leads two study groups for clinicians.
