Weaving Braids and Cords

The Fiber Garden welcomes you to our workshops, mercantile, and travel tours focused on the fiber arts. Owner Deb Jones is an enthusiastic spinner, dyer, weaver, teacher and travel consultant. From time to time, we also host a music event, featuring the hammered dulcimer. Hospitality is our hallmark!

Learn kumihimo, lucet, and slentre techniques all in one day in one workshop!

The Fiber Garden

There are a lot of uses for braids and cords and this workshop will focus on three techniques that will help you weave several different types. We will explore Kumihimo which uses a foam disc to make round or flat braids. For the second technique we will use a Lucet to make square cords. Finally, participants will learn to use your fingers for braiding, a technique called Slentre. All these techniques can be done almost anywhere and are quite portable. During this class we will be using different types of fiber for the techniques and incorporating beads into some of the designs. You will complete braids and cords using each technique. The braids and cords can be used for straps for bags/totes, shoe laces, bracelets, trims for knitwear or hand wovens, and embellishments for clothing or home furnishings.Workshop fee is $75. In addition, a materials fee of $50 will be paid directly to the instructor at the workshop and includes a kumihimo foam disc, lucet and spring clamp to take home, a supply of various types of fiber to make braids and cords during class, written directions. A $20 non-refundable, non-transferable deposit will be due at the time of registration to confirm your space.  The remainder of your fee will be paid at the conclusion of your workshop. (Fees are only refunded if an event is canceled by the Fiber Garden. Thank you for understanding.)COVID-19 policy: All 2022 events are pending due to the pandemic. Until further notice, all participants in Fiber Garden hosted events are required to show proof of full vaccination, including a booster, to participate. There may be additional protocols implemented to ensure maximum safety of participants. Protocols may include masks, distancing, at-home rapid testing. By registering for a Fiber Garden-sponsored event, you agree to comply with any established guidelines. COVID-19 protocols are subject to change at any time as public health guidance is updated. Please understand that this is my personal home. For nearly 25 years it has been a place of retreat and creative space for so many. It must also be a place of safety, for you and for me.
