Balancing Privacy and Security in the Age of the Internet: A Debate between Nadine Strossen and David Rivkin

What are the proper limits and obligations on governments and businesses in conducting surveillance? And what concessions are individuals and businesses obliged to make in the name of security?
One of the most controversial issues of the Internet age is the appropriate boundary between security and individual privacy. As both encryption and surveillance technologies become more sophisticated, balancing privacy and security interests has become increasingly complicated. These tensions were highlighted in the wake of Apple’s recent dispute with the FBI and reports of terrorists’ use of advanced encryption software.
On Wednesday, May 4, Hudson Institute will host a debate between two of the foremost experts on these issues, Nadine Strossen and David Rivkin. They will present contrasting perspectives on the legality and morality of surveillance. Hudson Senior Fellow and Director of the Center for the Economics of the Internet, Harold Furchtgott-Roth, will moderate the discussion.

Nadine Strossen 
Nadine Strossen is a former president of the American Civil Liberties Union and was the first woman to lead the organization. Currently a professor at New York Law School, she has written, lectured, and practiced extensively in the areas of constitutional law, civil liberties, and international human rights. A preeminent defender of freedom, Professor Strossen was named one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America by the National Law Journal, and recognized as one of the 200 most influential women in America by Vanity Fair. She is currently a member of the ACLU’s National Advisory Council, the Advisory Board of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC), and the Council on Foreign Relations. Professor Strossen graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard College (1972) and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School (1975), where she was an editor of the Harvard Law Review.
David Rivkin 
An expert in constitutional and international law, David Rivkin is a partner at Baker Hostetler LLP and Senior Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. A recipient of the Burton Award for Legal Achievement, his experience includes successfully defending former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld against several Bivens actions, and representing the 26 States that challenged the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. He previously served in the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, including positions in the White House Counsel’s office, Office of the Vice President, and the Departments of Justice and Energy. A prolific commentator, Mr. Rivkin’s writing has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, USA Today, and Los Angeles Times. Mr. Rivkin holds a JD degree from Columbia University Law School, a Master’s degree in Soviet Affairs from Georgetown University, and a Bachelor’s of Science from Georgetown's School of Foreign Service.
