Join us for a reception and art walk honoring Black History Month.

The City and Building Bridges Art Exchange are partnering to host an art reception from 2-3 p.m. at Building Bridges Art Exchange, Unit F2 at the Bergamot Station Arts Center, 2525 Michigan Ave. to highlight Black History Month exhibits:<ul><li>Historical and present-day Black figures who contributed to the health and wellness field in Santa Monica, in collaboration with the Quinn Research Center</li><li>Artwork by local school children</li><li>Artwork by Chelle Barbour, a mixed media artist with an interdisciplinary practice based in Los Angeles. Barbour is best recognized for her diverse Afro-Futurist and Afro-Surrealist collages that challenges the notion of agency and black beauty.</li></ul>The reception will also feature a special performance by actress and playwright Lorinda Hawkins Smith who will portray Biddy Mason, who made major contributions to Black health and wellness. Following the reception, the public is invited to browse the art exhibits at Building Bridges until 6 p.m. and take a self-guided art walk of the other Bergamot galleries displaying Black History-themed exhibits.: <ul><li>Gallery XII, Unit B2: Showcasing work by artists Yannis Davy Guibinga and Aaron Lacy, and jazz photographs of the 1950s, a period when the laws of segregation were still in force in the United States and musicians were feted in Post-war Europe. <h3>About Chelle Barbour</h3>Chelle Barbour is a mixed media artist with an interdisciplinary practice based in Los Angeles. Barbour is best recognized for her diverse Afro-Futurist and Afro-Surrealist collages that challenges the notion of agency and black beauty. Over the last few years Barbour’s collage work has emerged in galleries and museum exhibitions nationwide. Her metaphorical interlocutors cast a wide net from chameleons, agent provocateurs, goddesses, and muses, to commanding warriors and spies, Barbour’s collage portraiture conveys allegory, fantasy, femininity, resilience and all that is inherently complex in the black female imaginary. Lorinda Hawkins Smith is an actress, author, comedian, musician, filmmaker, playwright and domestic violence survivor. Bridget "Biddy" Mason is a major inspiration for Smith who enjoys sharing her story and is honored to have portrayed her in the art installation at the Los Angeles Public Library - Historical Portraits Project. Smith’s book “The Bite,” which is the first in her book series based on the play she wrote and performed “Justice? Or...Just Me?” is available on Amazon. The award-winning “The Bite” is part of Solofest 2022 and available for viewing online.
