The Center for Educators and Schools at The New York Public Library offers professional learning programs, workshops, and collaborative events that connect educators and students with library collections, scholars, and cultural institutions. We support teaching and learning through inquiry-based, classroom-ready experiences across disciplines and grade levels.

In this workshop for educators, learn about New Amsterdam and Black History through maps and library collections.

In this virtual professional development workshop, we feature an object from The Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library’s Treasures, the map depicting New Amsterdam in 1660. We will make connections to the book How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning With the History of Slavery Across America by Clint Smith. We will practice visual literacy skill building through close examination of maps. We will discuss how to integrate them into your teaching, in order to explore Black History of New Amsterdam. We will provide additional objects, books, and databases. Participants will receive 1.5 CTLE credits.ASL interpretation will be made available upon request with two weeks notice -- please indicate your needs during registration by 1/27.
