Jay Kranyik, "Botany of the Southern Appalachians &amp; the Benefits of Natural Landscaping"Jay Kranyik is the Chairman of Horticulture and Garden Manager of the Botanical Gardens at Asheville and is in his twenty-second year with the organization. He is co-author of the first exhaustive flora of Dupont State Forest and has botanized widely in the region for thirty-five years. He is a proud member of the Cloud Appreciation Society and is a badge-carrying Blue Ridge Parkway “Junior Ranger.” The Botanical Garden at Asheville is dedicated to the study and promotion of the plants and habitats of the Southern Appalachians.

Craig LeHoullier, "Epic Tomatoes from your Garden: Some History, Varieties, &amp; Tips for Success" Craig LeHoullier lives and gardens in Hendersonville, North Carolina. His love of heirloom tomatoes began with his joining the Seed Savers Exchange, an organization for which he continues to serve as adviser for tomatoes, in 1986. He is responsible for naming and popularizing many well-known tomatoes, such as Cherokee Purple. In 2005 he added amateur tomato breeding to his garden resume, and continues to co-lead the Dwarf Tomato Breeding project, responsible for creating 125 (and counting) new compact growing varieties for space-challenged gardeners. His writing career kicked off with a 2012 request from Storey Publishing to write a book on tomatoes, resulting in Epic Tomatoes (2015). His second book, Growing Vegetables in Straw bales, soon followed (2016). Book 3, focusing on the Dwarf Tomato Breeding Project, is in progress and should be completed during 2020 as a self-published creation. He is a popular lecturer across the country at major gardening events, as well as a frequent guest on podcasts and radio shows.

Annie Martin, "Moss Magic in Your Garden: Shade &amp; Sun Options"Annie Martin is an Asheville native who now lives in Brevard, North Carolina. She is an educator, landscape designer and farmer of mosses. Annie has become a world-respected expert in creating moss gardens. Annie’s business, Mountain Moss Enterprises, won a 2010 North Carolina agriculture grant to advance the cultivation of mosses. “Mosses are my passion. As owner of Mountain Moss, I cultivate shade and sun moss species at my Mossery. I am committed to ethical practices, professional standards, and quality products. A nationally-recognized expert in moss landscaping, I offer a unique blend of creative talents and practical experience which enhance my ability to achieve successful and sustainable solutions.” She is the author of “The Magical World of Moss Gardening” and has been featured in numerous magazines and newspapers including The New York Times.

Workshop Options (Choose ONE) (WORKSHOPS ARE CONCURRING.)Moss Dish Garden Workshop - $20 (Limit 34)Enhance your moss journey by creating your own miniature moss landscape at a special hands-on workshop on moss gardening. Annie Martin (aka Mossin’ Annie) will discuss the values of mosses in today’s landscapes while she demonstrates design principles and planting methods on a smaller scale in a container. An array of moss species, lichens, decorative anchor rocks, glimmering pebbles, soil and containers provided by Mountain Moss. Learn the Benefits of Native Bees and Construct a Mason Bee House - $10 (Limit 23)Increasing native bee populations is one of the best ways to support local ecosystems and increase your garden and fruit tree yields. Create a habitat to attract these native pollinators by creating your own mason bee house. Seed Germination Workshop - $5 (Limit 24)Attendees will learn germination techniques to start plants indoors and the materials needed to do so, as well as the best practices for care and transplanting of seedlings. The workshop will cover the importance of lighting, fertilization, watering, and the collection and storage of seeds. Attendees will have hands-on practice planting seeds and transplanting seedlingsMethods for Creating Raised Beds – Free (Unlimited)Raised beds are accessible, flexible, and productive ways to garden. Learn about the best materials to create your bed along with the pros and cons of each to understand differences in cost, performance and safety. This workshop will include a tour of a raised bed garden including an accessible bed for those with mobility issues.
