2022 Future of Hope Faith & Justice Summit

Johnson University's Future of Hope Institute is a justice-driven youth theology and leadership initiative for Knoxville high school students. This nine-month program encourages cohorts of twenty high school students from Knoxville to become involved in their community and mentors them in the creation and development of community-based projects.

The 2022 Faith and Justice Summit calls participants to engage with and take action on issues of faith and justice facing their community.

Thank you for your interest in Future of Hope's Faith and Justice Summit! This year's summit is over, but we'll be back next year.

<p>This year's theme centers on education inequity and how it affects our communities in ways we see and those we don't. We'll have dynamic worship led by worship leader and musician, J.Blake White, and two keynote speakers. Dr. Terrell Strayhorn, provost of Virginia Union University, and Elizabeth Cronlund who specializes in Community Development. Both speakers will engage with the topic of education from the perspective of practical theology. </p>

<p>There are also multiple workshops available that highlight topics such as spiritual formation and social justice, education inequity in Knoxville, how justice fits into God's story, and the issue of CRT in education. Don't miss the chance to engage theologically and holistically with the issues facing the city of Knoxville and the broader concern of education inequity. </p>

<p>This year's summit will take place over Zoom and will use tools such as breakout rooms to create small group workshop spaces, etc. In order to take part in the summit, please be sure that you've downloaded and have logged into the Zoom application before the summit's start time. </p><p>We will be posting additional details, including the full conference schedule soon. </p>

<h2>Workshops</h2><p>Each night you will have the option of attending one of our workshops based on local and national issues. </p>

<h2>Spiritual Formation and Social Justice</h2><p>There are many books about spiritual formation and how important it is in the life of a growing believer. In this session, you’ll get to hear from one Christian community development practitioner whose personal time with the Lord led to a clear call to serve “the least of these.”</p><p><strong>Workshop Leader:</strong></p><p>Stephen Grindle</p>

<h2>Approaching History in Public Schools</h2><p>Critical Race Theory has been a polarizing subject, to say the least, and last year the debate led to the passing of legislation in the state of Tennessee aimed at shaping curriculum for students. In this workshop, you will get a definition of Critical Race Theory as well as how Knox County Schools will be interpreting the recent change in state law to ensure that all students in Knoxville will still learn an accurate telling of history.</p><p><strong>Workshop Leaders:</strong></p><p>Dr. James Gorman</p><p>Shannon Jackson </p>

<h2>Biblical Foundations for Faith &amp; Justice</h2><p>What does justice have to do with being a follower of Christ? As it turns out, a great deal. In fact, we’d argue that justice is the driving force behind the whole story of the Bible. In this session, we’ll explore the definition of justice, dive into its role in the biblical narrative, and see how faith and justice connect in really important ways in the lives we’re called to as Christians.</p><p><strong>Workshop Leaders:</strong></p><p>Dr. Jon Weatherly</p><p>Ashley Caradine</p>

<h2>The Role of a Local School Board Member</h2><p>In addition to teachers and administrators, local boards of education play a pivotal role in shaping the quality of education students receive in our public schools. In this workshop, you will hear from a current school board member about what the board actually does, get your questions answered, and learn more about ways you can support or influence your local elected officials.</p><p><strong>Workshop Leader:</strong></p><p>Daniel Watson</p>
