AGPS Advanced Institute with Nancy Kelly, PhD: Exploring the Erotic in Group

The Austin Group Psychotherapy Society is an interdisciplinary organization of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and counselors who share a mutual commitment to continuing professional development and to excellence in the practice of group psychotherapy.Over the past decade, the Austin Group Psychotherapy Society (AGPS) has gained national recognition for the quality of our training opportunities and the warmth and enthusiasm of our members.AGPS trainings and social events are designed to mentor new professionals and students, expand the knowledge and clinical skills of all members, and enrich and rejuvenate established practitioners.

This advanced institute offers therapists an opportunity to explore some of the ways a group therapist may encourage or hinder the exploration of erotic feelings in group. We'll begin the day with a brief didactic discussion, then shift into an experiential process group where our chief task is to notice the ebb and flow of erotic (or attachment-seeking) energy in our group. We will end the day with another brief didactic discussion, taking time to recap and summarize observations of the leader's role in the group.
What does Advanced Institute mean? Advanced institutes are designed to support group leadership skills of advanced group clinicians.  To be eligible for an Advanced Institute, participants should be licensed professional group facilitators that have led groups for at least 5 years.  In addition it is expected that participants have already attended at least one Institute themselves either locally or as part of AGPA.

         - Factors that impede/facilitate our ability to work with the erotic 
         - Distinguishing “benign” from “malignant” erotic energy
9:45 – 10:30 Process group
10:30-10:45 Break
10:45-12:15 Process group
12:15-1:30 Lunch
1:30-3:00 Process group 
3:00-3:15 Break
3:15-4:30 Process group 
4:30-4:50   Brief didactic and summary
         - The cultivation of “therapeutic androgyny”
4:50-5:00 Institute evaluations
Participants will be able to:

<LI>Describe two factors that facilitate, as well as two factors that hinder the exploration of erotic fantasies and feelings in a therapy group.</LI>
<LI>Explain some differences between maturational and defensive use of erotic feelings by group members.</LI>
<LI>Observe his/her own internal response to erotic longing, sadism, or play in a group setting.</LI>

<IMG STYLE="float: left; margin: 7 px;" ALT="" SRC="https://cdn.evbuc.com/eventlogos/165073340/webnancykelly9496edit.30392400std.jpg" HEIGHT="248" WIDTH="310">Nancy Kelly Ph.D., LCSW, CGP is a psychotherapist in private practice.  She earned a doctorate in modern philosophy from Stanford University and taught aesthetics and literary theory before pursuing her clinical training.   After completing her degree in social work, Dr. Kelly spent five years working with trauma survivors at the Austin Rape Crisis Center (now SafePlace). She serves on the faculty at the Center for Group Studies in New York and recently authored the article, “Women Therapists and Resistance to Erotic Countertransference, “ Modern Psychoanalysis 39 (2).
