The Waldorf Astoria

Founded in 1898, the National Arts Club is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to stimulate, foster, and promote public interest in the arts and to educate the American people in the fine arts. Annually, the Club offers more than 150 free programs—both in-person and virtually—to the public, including exhibitions, theatrical and musical performances, lectures, and readings, attracting an audience of over 30,000 in-person visitors and thousands more online. The NAC is also a proud community partner, serving the public through fellowships, concert series, youth education programs, and more. An architectural look at the famed Waldorf Astoria

When the Waldorf Astoria opened its doors on Park Avenue in 1931, the new building became an instant New York City icon. The world’s first skyscraper hotel has been home to celebrities, host to world leaders, and the site of famed cultural events. Designed by renowned architects Schultze &amp; Weaver, the American Art Deco building has been renovated repeatedly in the intervening years, sometimes altering the original architecture. Owner Dajia Insurance Group and architects Skidmore, Owings &amp; Merrill are undertaking a comprehensive and highly complex restoration of the exterior and the landmarked interiors. Speaker Frank Mahan is a principal at Skidmore, Owings &amp; Merrill and Director of its Adaptive Reuse Practice. He has led the successful redevelopments of icons like the Waldorf Astoria and the James A. Farley Post Office. Mahan has been recognized with the AIA Young Architects Award and named to Building Design+Construction’s 40 Under 40 list.This is an in-person event. All guests must have received a COVID-19 vaccine. Masks are also required.RSVP does not guarantee entry. Doors open to the public 15 minutes before the event. Please arrive early to check in.Our coat check is limited. Please do not bring any large bags or backpacks.
