As the public center for visual arts at Tufts University, the Art Galleries create a dynamic learning space through a responsive program of contemporary art exhibitions, events, collecting, and scholarship, across our two locations in Medford and Boston. We're excited to welcome you back to Tufts University Art Galleries for "Art for the Future" related programs.

Join us for a lively closing roundtable discussion and celebration with Artists Call participants and key organizers, and exhibition co-curators, including Lucy Lippard, Doug Ashford, Daniel Flores y Ascencio, Dona Ann McAdams, Sabra Moore, Gregory Sholette, Josely Carvalho, Jerri Allyn, and others. And celebrate the release of the bilingual English-Spanish exhibition catalogue, co-published by Inventory Press, that features essays by artists and the exhibition curators as well as interviews with Artists Call organizers.This program is supported in part by the Tufts University Toupin-Bolwell Fund, Tufts University AS&amp;E Diversity Fund, and the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA).This program will be presented in English with Spanish interpretation.Featuring: Doug Ashford is a teacher, artist, and writer. He is Professor at The Cooper Union, where he has taught since 1989. His principal practice from 1982 to 1996 was as a member ofthe artists’ collaborative Group Material. A collection of his work, Writings and Interviews, was published in 2013. Josely Carvalho, a multimedia artist, born in São Paulo, maintains studios in Rio de Janeiro and New York. Her artwork embraces several mediums and seeks to highlight memory, identity, women’s issues, and social justice while challenging boundaries between art, publics, and politics. A monograph of her work, Diary of Images, was published in 2018. Erina Duganne is Associate Professor of Art History at Texas State University. Her research and teaching focus on intersections between aesthetic experiences and activistpractices as well as race and representation. Recent publications include Cold War Camera and Global Photography: A Critical History. Daniel Flores y Ascencio, of Maya/Ahuachapaneco and Nonualka descent, is a poet and filmmaker who lives between El Salvador and New York City. He founded the now defunct Institute of Arts and Letters of El Salvador in Exile (INALSE), which was instrumental in organizing Artists Call Against U.S. Intervention in Central America in the 1980s. He is presently working on a new documentary film, Cutacuzcat, and a book based on his repatriation. Dona Ann McAdams has been making photographs for over forty years, her work exhibited at venues such as the Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The International Center for Photography, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among other places. Since 1983, she has been committed to bringing cameras and photography into small, underserved communities, setting up community darkrooms and teaching people how to shoot, process, and develop their own film and document their own lives. Lucy R. Lippard is a writer, activist, and sometime curator, author of twenty-five books on contemporary art, cultural studies, and local history. She is co-founder of various activist artists groups and lives in Galisteo, New Mexico, where she is active in the community and edits the monthly newsletter. Gregory Sholette was a founding member of Political Art Documentation/Distribution PAD/D 1980-1988), which issued publications on politically engaged art and whose archive is now in the Museum of Modern Art; of REPOhistory (1989-2000), a collective of artists and activists who repossessed suppressed histories in New York in the 1990s; and more recently, of Gulf Labor, a group of artists advocating for migrant workers constructing museums in Abu Dhabi. Sholette documents and reflects upon decades of activist art that, for its ephemerality, politics, and market resistance, might otherwise remain invisible. He is a Professor of studio art and co-directs the Social Practice Queens MFA concentration and certificate at Queens College CUNY.
