The Big Easy, Church Girls, Keep Your Secrets at Comet Ping Pong

The Big Easy + Church Girls + Keep Your Secrets
9pm - $13 - All Ages
THE BIG EASY
New York, NY
https://thebigeasy.bandcamp.com/
The members of The Big Easy don’t pull from any one box, and that’s why they don’t fit in one, either. At any moment, their music can call to mind Cursive, PUP, or The Beach Boys. It’s rule-bending emo, pop-punk, and indie rock.
CHURCH GIRLS
Philadelphia, PA
https://churchgirls.bandcamp.com/
Philly four-piece Church Girls write propulsive melodies and achingly vulnerable lyrics wrapped in the throbbing anxiety of post-punk and joyous aggression of pop-punk. Formed in 2014 by Mariel Beaumont, the group has toured extensively across the US, UK, Canada, & Europe and been featured at Audiotree, Paste Magazine, Bandcamp New & Notable and more. Their new record Still Blooms confronts heavy themes while refusing to let the struggles of life smother its hope, enthusiasm, and energy. The lyric in “Undone” that the album draws its title from (“Unwind the clocks, pull the blinds, and you’ll find the sky still blooms”) feels like a thesis statement. Chiming guitar melodies alongside stuttering palm-mutes and gang vocals express an irrepressible urge to find the bursts of light that shine through the cracks of even the darkest tunnels. The final line (“Hate that I’m getting used to this sort of thing”) seems like resignation in the abstract, but with Beaumont’s triumphant delivery, it reads more like a proclamation of perseverance. With Still Blooms, Church Girls have crafted their most emotionally affecting album yet-- devastating and desperate in one moment, ebullient and sanguine the next, and yet overcoming any and all obstacles to become a cohesive, succinctly catchy and uplifting statement of purpose.
KEEP YOUR SECRETS
Washington, DC
https://keepyoursecrets.bandcamp.com/
Keep Your Secrets is a pop punk band with easycore and emo influences based in Washington, DC. Their new EP "Let's Face It, We're Lost" is a defiant and heartfelt soundtrack for young adults who still have much life left to live, but nevertheless have experienced hardship and heartbreak and have grown stronger for it. It's a rallying cry to make the most out of life, and to never give up no matter how lost you may become. The band started out in May 2020 as a YouTube cover channel by founding members and college friends Malerie Gamblin and Matt Nguyen-Ngo. After receiving a shoutout from TikTok influencer and musician Joseph DuBay in April 2021, Malerie and Matt’s performances of Billie Eilish’s “Therefore I Am” and Machine Gun Kelly’s “Forget Me Too” gained traction on streaming and social media sites, taking them from relative obscurity to thousands of streams and followers overnight. This inspired the two to turn their project into a full-fledged band. As a pop punk band composed of all people of color and fronted by a Black woman, Keep Your Secrets aims to make their mark within this predominantly white male genre.
