He is the programme director for three Masters programmes on typeface design and typography. Two of these programmes, together with the TDi summer course, are global firsts and discipline leaders. His research and PhD supervision focus on theoretical topics in typography and typeface design; qualitative analysis and reframing narratives in typeface design; typeface design processes and user preferences; archives-based typeface design history; and user-focused issues in typography. He is increasingly active in developing research methods for diverse student bodies at postgraduate levels, with particular focus on archives-based research. He works regularly on knowledge transfer projects, course development, and community outreach. He is a Past President of ATypI, co-founder of ISTVC and Granshan Foundation, and initiator of events worldwide.
