Mark DeGarmo Dance announces its 12th Annual Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change 2022, a sharing of 24 curated original transcultural transdisciplinary works-in-progress by 28 dance artists in eight countries, seven U.S. states, and NYC.

Mark DeGarmo Dance Continues its 2022 Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change through June 2022, Featuring International, U.S., New York City Emerging, BIPOC Performing Artists on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 7PM ET on Zoom: a sharing of works-in-progress with a facilitated audience response curated and facilitated by dancer, choreographer, writer, researcher, and Founder, Executive &amp; Artistic Director of MDD Dr. Mark DeGarmo.Mark DeGarmo Dance continues its transcultural transdisciplinary Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change 2022 to an international audience on Zoom with performances featuring global performing artists from New York City and Riga, Latvia-- Sloga Iyengar (New York City), Marija Krtolica &amp; Dustin Maxwell (New York City), Aigars Larionovs &amp; Nauris Mikelis Goba (Riga, Latvia), and Debbie Mausner (New York City) on Thursday April 7th at 7PM ET. Each performance is curated and includes audience response supported, encouraged, and facilitated by Dr. Mark DeGarmo.Founded in 2010, MDD's Salon Performance Series for Social Change provides a curated opportunity to view, engage with, and demystify original dance and movement works-in-progress of selected guest artists. The 2020-21 season featured 263 artists/performers in 12 salons from 23 countries and 16 U.S. states held virtually on Zoom. Mark DeGarmo Dance supports under-resourced and under-recognized dance and movement artists based in New York City, the U.S., and internationally. MDD’s immediate pivot to live virtual programming since March 2020 has led the fields of dance, performing arts, education, and nonprofit organizations from the beginning of the pandemic. MDD’s webinar on navigating live remote teaching with New York City public elementary schools and students for the National Dance Education Organization for 150 U.S. dance educators in June 2020 exemplifies its commitment to dance in all of its forms for all audiences locally, nationally, and internationally.Dancer/performer, choreographer, writer, and researcher Mark DeGarmo curates the series and supports and facilitates audience response as part of each salon. DeGarmo guides discourse among the artists and audience members and encourages the public to actively participate in the development of original works-in-progress and understanding of dance as an accessible transcultural transdisciplinary art form and an essential part of humankind’s cultural heritage.About the ArtistsSloka Iyengar is a neuroscientist and Bharatanatyam dancer passionate about using her dance and science training for public impact. She is the founder of “SamyuktaNYC” (Samyukta in Sanskrit means “to come together”) to explore the many points of convergence between dance and neuroscience.Marija Krtolica (PhD in dance, Temple University; MA PS NYU; MFA choreography UC Davis) has been making dance-theater since the early 1990s. In her recent works, she aims to join an experimental artistic practice with a critical analysis of the shifting meanings of the expressive embodiment in society.Dustin Maxwell is a movement based performer, performance maker, visual artist, yogasana instructor, thai bodyworker, and death doula in training. He holds a BA in Dance from the University of Minnesota. He is a 2019 Jerome Hill Artist Fellow and was nominated for a 2015 Sage Award for Outstanding Performer.Aigars Larionovs is a Latvian-born movement artist and choreographer. He graduated with an MFA degree from Florida State University School of Dance in May 2020. He has taught capoeira and dance workshops in the US, Latvia, Italy, and Greece. He has performed works by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Guy Nader and Maria Campos, Ilze Zirina, and Josephine Garibaldi.Nauris Mikelis Goba is a Latvian dancer and Choreographer. He graduated from Latvia Academy of Culture with his BA in contemporary dance art. Nauris has participated in international dance projects such as SHARE festival in Slovakia and Macedonia, COLINE dance education program in France, and others. Debbie Mausner is a dance artist and educator from Brooklyn, NY. In addition to choreographing and performing, she is also a co-founder and producer of the emerging artist series Current Showcase.About Mark DeGarmo DanceFounded in 1987, Mark DeGarmo Dance is a leading New York nonprofit dance organization that educates New York City communities and children; creates, performs, and disseminates original artistic work; and builds intercultural community through dance arts.
