Seagrape Apothecary

Tend to your magical sanctuary through the somatic practice of altar-building with folk herbalist Lisa Fazio.

Altars are sacred places where we ritualize the presence of the holy or divine by placing meaningful objects that symbolize our intentions, requests, prayers, offerings, and devotions to the unseen. Creating altars is a somatic practice, because we move, arrange, and interact with sacred space, that activates our own inner knowing of how to be in relationship with magic and spirit. The items that we place on our altars and the way that they’re arranged bring our focus to whatever is represented by them. An altar is a place of focus and contemplation where we can direct our attention toward the sacred. Basically, the altar elicits a shift in consciousness because of the meaning we have attached to it and the items placed upon it.In this class we will discuss various styles of altar building including the ancient Roman “lararium” or altar to the household spirits and familial gods. We will also learn about seasonal altars, ancestor altars, and Benedicaria (Italian folk Catholic) altars. This talk will include a demonstration of each of these styles.———————————————NOTE:This is a live workshop, with a recording available for 30 days sent out to all registered participants.Buying this course as a gift? Email us at events@seagrapeapothecary.com_________________________About the instructor:Lisa Fazio (she/her) is a folk and clinical herbalist, astrologer, writer, mother, and the descendant of Irish and Italian immigrants. She lives on the traditional lands of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy in the foothills of the Adirondack mountains in what is now known as New York State. Lisa is a second generation Italian American, a practitioner of Benedicaria (the art of blessing, and a lineage witch whose Nonna (grandmother) was born in the city of Benevento, Italy that is also known as La Citta Delle Streghe (the city of witches). Lisa’s Nonno was born in the ancient village of Feroleto Antico in Calabria, Italy. She teaches courses on plant medicine and using plants for ancestral reconnection from an Italian American and traditional western herbalism perspective.
