Founded in 1978, the Downriver Council for the Arts (DCA) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) arts and cultural organization that proudly serves nearly 400,000 residents in 21 Downriver communities. The DCA's mission is to enrich the quality of life in the Downriver communities by advocating and promoting the arts and providing opportunities for involvement and participation in arts and cultural activities. We actively support local artists and performers through artistic outreach programs and special promotional opportunities. The DCA also creates regional partnerships with other cultural organizations, schools and service clubs to promote artistic, cultural and special events throughout Southeast Michigan. We hold these activities in our Arts Center and by operating in the various cities we serve. Each program and event at the DCA seeks to increase knowledge and understanding of art and ourselves, improve skills by participants, change one’s attitude or values, give enjoyment, inspiration, and creativity.

We will take the traditional techniques of tying and dying fabric, shibori, to create and experiment with scarves.

The Japanese word Shibori is defined as various ways of embellishing fabric and textiles by means of folding and shaping the cloth in a secure fashion before dying. The root verb is shiboru which literally means to “wring, squeeze or press”, emphasizing the action performed on the fabric. This technique treats the cloth as a three-dimensional surface rather than two-dimensional through the process of folding, crumpling, stitching, twisting, plucking and even placing objects such as stones in the fabric and securing it. Through this approach, there are a huge variety of ways to practice the shibori fabric technique, thus there are many interesting results from around the world. In this workshop, we will take the traditional techniques of tying and dying fabric, shibori, to create and experiment. The results are elegant and unique designs on a scarf that you can wear or give as a gift to show off your creation and stay warm this winter! Both workshops will offer different color options.Ages: 12 and up.Instructor: Emily KokayCost: $20 per student per workshop. All materials will be providedRegistration online only. We will not be taking registrations in person or over the phone at the DCA. Deadline to register is one day before start of session.Space is limited. Maximum of 12 students per session. You must agree to full COVID guidelines listed on the website. Be advised that we will be following all mandated covid restrictions as announced. We are asking all users of the arts center to follow safe social distancing measures. Hand sanitizer is available in public places throughout the building. If you are sick, please stay home. Check our website for current guidelines and hours of operation. Please refer questions to dc4arts@downriverarts.orgFine Print:Adults are welcome to stay at the arts center during class time, but we request that you not participate in the class. Please be mindful that (especially during covid restricted times) we have a limited number of bodies allowed in a space. Also, our instructors are there to teach the children, and adults may be distracting to the group. Feel free to roam the building, visit our main floor gallery, lounge in the hallway, explore the auditorium or create art. Wifi is available as well as spaces for you to work.It is the guardian’s/student’s responsibility to stay home if you are sick. If you have a fever, stay home. If someone in your house is sick, stay home. If you have allergies and can’t control sneezing, and cough please stay home. If you have been exposed or if you show signs of Covid-19, please stay home. If you miss a class, we will work with you on getting the instructions home to students, or possibly have an online option. If class is cancelled by the DCA or Executive Orders, we will refund your remaining classes.Maintain 6 feet distance from person-to-person at all times. Facemasks are encouraged at the present time of publishing this event, however could be required if executive orders mandate them. Hand sanitizer is available for immediate use at the front entrance and entrance into each of our common areas. Parents please drop off and pick up your children outside when possible.All students will be requested to use hand sanitizer as they enter the classroom common area. Please wash hands with soap and water for at least 30 seconds after touching metal surfaces, sneezing, coughing, blowing your nose or using the restroom. In the case of being diagnosed with Covid-19 or show symptoms, immediately notify the DCA by email at dc4arts@downriverarts.org.By registering for this class, you are agreeing to the terms listed above.
