Michelle is a Level 2 Authorised Ashtanga practitioner and teacher. She has been studying yoga and meditation for 26 years. Michelle lost both of her parents during her teen years. Her father was an alcoholic. Michelle lived out of home from the age of 14 including spending some of this time on the streets. Michelle was also emotionally and sexually abused by family members and friends during her youth. And has been a survivor of domestic violence. Nea is a level 2 authorised Ashtanga yoga teacher and has been teaching internationally since 2008, in Dubai since 2012 where she founded Ashtanga Yoga Dubai. David Garrigues is an internationally recognized yoga teacher and creator of the Asana Kitchen video instruction series that is one of the leading online yoga learning resources on YouTube. Santina is an Ashtanga teacher (Authorised Level II) and Gestalt therapist (Masters of Gestalt Therapy). She believes there are many pathways into and towards healing and inner transformation. Angela Jamison began exploring ashtanga yoga in 2000, and has practiced daily without a break since April 2003. She first met her teacher R. Sharath Jois on the led class tours he assisted in California in the early 2000s. There was a strong recognition of him from this time. In 2009, she made the first of many 2-3 month trips to Mysore. In February 2011, he authorized her to teach. That spring, she committed to full-time Mysore style teaching, leaving a career as an economic and cultural sociologist. AY:A2 incorporated that summer. In December 2017, Sharath certified her to teach the advanced series. She will continue to travel to Mysore to practice, and to deepen my understanding of the roots of this method. When the pandemic began in 2020, she invited alumni of the first ten years of our Ann Arbor shala to join a private teaching portal online. Since that time, she has worked daily with a group of long-time students in 15 time zones around the world. Adam Keen is an Authorised level 2 teacher who has also completed the advanced A series with Sharathji Jois in Mysore over numerous trips. He is a keen philosopher and discusser of all topics yoga related from healing from trauma to how to relate to food and diet – having also started off life as a restaurant cook. He leads an online Mysore group as well as co-running Keen On Yoga with his wife Theresa, an online platform supporting the Ashtanga community through workshops and events. Lastly, he is host of the Keen on Yoga Podcast, with guests from the Ashtanga community and beyond with a view to support yoga lifestyles for aspiring yogis.Class description: This will be an instructed led class that will also be demonstrated by Adam. You will be counted through with adaptations suggested where necessary and you can follow at your own pace. It will cover roughly 2/3rd of the Primary Series. Greg Nardi, E-RYT 500, Yoga Unify QE-3 is the lead teacher of Ashtanga Yoga Worldwide classes, workshops, and trainings.Ashtanga Yoga Worldwide comes from Greg’s 25+ years of experience studying, practicing, and teaching yoga. Dr. Shyam Ranganathan (MA South Asian Studies, MA and PhD Philosophy) is a field-changing researcher, scholar, author and teacher of philosophy, and an expert in the neglected traditions of Indian moral philosophy, which covers practical questions of how to live, what to aim for, and what we should value—including Yoga. Dr. Ranganathan is a trained scholar and researcher of philosophy and is author, editor and translator of over 50 peer reviewed, scholarly works (including Ethics and the History of Indian Philosophy MLBD 2008 and 2017; the Bloomsbury Research Handbook of Indian Ethics 2017; and Hinduism: A Contemporary Philosophical Investigation, Routledge 2018). A specialist in translation, having written his PhD dissertation on the topic of how we can understand texts without projecting our beliefs onto them, Dr. Ranganathan translated Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra (Penguin 2008). Meditation is treated as an extra step, perhaps related to other limbs of Yoga. Meditation is easily identified with the seventh and eight of the ancient Buddhist Eight Fold Path, or the last three limbs of Patañjali’s Yoga. But what is meditation according to Yoga? To answer this, we might begin by clarifying what “Yoga” the Sanskrit term is translated as in English. Turns out, “yoga” is the Sanskrit word that is translated as meditation. There’s no extra practice that is meditation in Yoga. But then all of Yoga is meditation. Nina Rao learned traditional chants (bhajans) from her grandfather in a village in south India when she was nine years old. The chants quietly stayed with her until she rediscovered chanting with Krishna Das in New York in 1996. Her childhood was spent living in and moving between many countries around the world and when she settled in New York her working life began in the banking world, switched to organizing and leading photographic wildlife safaris in Africa and India, and now for many years, is Krishna Das' business manager and assistant.Nina tours with Krishna Das, playing cymbals and singing with him, and was honored in 2013 to accompany him at the Grammy Awards webcast performance. In 2007, she recorded the track 'Nina Chalisa' on Krishna Das' CD "Flow of Grace - Chanting the Hanuman Chalisa". In January 2013, she released her debut album, "Antarayaami - Knower of All Hearts". The double CD includes devotional kirtan, bhajan, and a variety of Hanuman Chalisa melodies including a duet with Krishna Das. Shamina Rao began teaching yoga after over 20 years of practice. Born in India, her childhood was steeped in the cultures of the East. Growing up she traveled throughout India, the Far East, and parts of Africa, all the while soaking in the teachings of these different cultures. She brings what she has absorbed over the years to her classes believing in the benefits of yoga for ALL people. Lisa began her studies of yoga in 1985 with David Life and Sharon Gannon of Jivamukti Yoga and has been practicing Ashtanga Yoga since 1992. She made her first trip to Mysore, India to study with Sri. K Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois in 1993.After several trips to Mysore, Lisa received Sri K Pattabhi Jois’s blessing to teach in 1997. In 1998, Lisa moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to study Ayurveda with Dr. Vasant Lad and began an Ashtanga program there. She taught daily until she relocated to Tucson, Arizona in 2002. She began a formal Ayurveda practice and taught healing practices from both sciences . In 2012 she founded Ashtanga Yoga Tucson.While in Mysore, India in 2009, Lisa was blessed to be with Sri K Pattabhi Jois just days before he left his body. During this trip she received authorization from R. Sharath Jois to teach the full intermediate Ashtanga series. She continues to visit India regularly to continue her studies. Lisa is the only Authorized level 2 teacher in Arizona blessed by Sri K Pattabhi Jois.With over 18 years of experience in Ayurveda, Lisa is a seasoned practitioner and has studied extensively with Dr. Vasant Lad, Dr. Sunil Joshi, Dr Anil Kumar and Dr. Robert Svaboda. She holds a Yoga Therapy Certificate from B.K.S. Iyengar which was granted in 1996. Harmony is a Certified Ashtanga Yoga Teacher and Wellness Coach. She is one of less than 20 women in the world to hold this honour. She began traveling to East Asia in 2002 to study Buddhism and Indian philosophy. She’s founded two yoga schools in Canada and spent five years living between India and Thailand. For the past twenty years Harmony's been focused on sharing the deeper teachings of yoga to support greater health and spiritual integration with students around the world, and has taught workshops in over 30 different countries. Eddie Stern is a yoga instructor raised in New York City. He studied Astanga Yoga, chanting, philosophy and ritual under Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, from Mysore, from 1991-2009, and is the founder of the Broome Street Ganesha Temple in NYC; co-publishes Namarupa, Categories of Indian Thought, a Hindu art and philosophy magazine; and runs the Urban Yogis project that brings yoga and meditation to young adults and youth in disadvantaged and at-risk-to-violence communities in NYC, with his collaborator, Deepak Chopra. He has published several books on Pattabhi Jois and Astanga Yoga, including a translation of Pattabhi Jois’s 1960 treatise, Yoga Mala. He continues to study with Pattabhi Jois’s grandson and successor, R. David Swenson began practicing yoga in 1969 at the age of 13. His older brother Dougwas his first teacher. They practiced hatha yoga from whatever books they could find. David's introduction to Ashtanga came in 1973 when he met David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff in Encinitas, California. In 1975 David and Nancy brought K. Pattabhi Jois to the U.S. for the first time and Swenson was fortunate enough to be there. Swenson made his first trip to Mysore in 1977. He is one of a very small number of people that have learned the full Ashtanga system as it was originally taught by K. Pattabhi Jois. David Swenson is recognized today as one of the world’s foremost practitioners and instructors of Ashtanga Yoga. Mission We broaden access to yoga, breathing and mindfulness techniques, focusing on communities who have experienced trauma. Our classes and training support individuals and teachers alike in recognizing their power for positive change. Vision We believe every yoga teacher needs training in trauma sensitivity and that everyone deserves access to a yoga experience, free of harm, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, ability or class. How We Partner Three and a Half Acres partners with other nonprofits and organizations to bring them yoga, meditation and mindfulness classes and workshops. We believe that the services we provide help our partners do what they do better and supports the organizations in their missions.

How We Train Every year over 15,000 individuals graduate from a yoga teacher training program and go out into the world eager to bring the immense benefits of yoga to others. This beautifully healing and profound work touches the student at the nervous system level, impacting their breath, body, emotions, and reactions, often in largely positive and even life-changing ways. At the same time, we know that 70% of the population has been affected by trauma in the US alone. Trauma survivors are in every room and their needs and reactions are different from other students. It’s of the utmost importance that we are giving yoga teachers the tools they need to avoid harm and re-triggering, as vulnerable practitioners enter their space. This is at the root of our work and the mission of Three and a Half Acres Yoga.

Three and a Half Acres Partners with organizations serving communities in FIVE categories: Domestic Abuse, Recovery, Food/Housing Insecurity, LGBTQ+, &amp; Justice. Here are some examples of the organizations we serve:● New Beginnings - A New York based non-profit transforming the lives of domestic violence survivors and homeless families, with a focus on communities of color and other vulnerable populations.● Services for the Underserved (S:US)- a Harlem non-profit driving scalable solutions to transform the lives of people with disabilities, people in poverty, people facing homelessness, and veterans.●The Phoenix - fosters a supportive, physically active free community for individuals who are recovering from a substance use disorder &amp; those who choose to live sober● New Alternatives - A New York based non-profit that increases the self-sufficiency of LGBTQ+ homeless youth by enabling them to transition out of the shelter system to stable adult lives.● RDJ Refugee Shelter - A New York City shelter specifically for asylum seekers and refugees experiencing homelessness.<ul>We also create opportunities for members of our programs to practice together.</ul>
