Nicole Yarling Quintet

The South Beach Jazz Festival takes places in venues throughout South Beach over three days during the first weekend in January.The festival takes pride in featuring world-renowned musicians who also have disabilities. Classic, Latin and New Orleans styles of Jazz are featured. Most of the performances are free, open to the public and outdoors. The sounds of Jazz enliven the city all weekend long and draw residents and tourists to listen, linger and groove.

She was inspired very early by her father, whoplayed jazz organ and piano, and her father's records, which all made animpact on Nicole's musical tastes. Aside from the familial influences, Nicole'seducation is extensive, ranging from a BA in Music from Baruch College, to a Masters in Music Education at Columbia University, as well as private trainingin composition, arranging, voice and violin.Nicole's notable talent has a virtue all its own, but it would be remiss notmention the late great vocal legend, Joe Williams. Joe discovered Nicolethrough a series of events, and adopted her as his very own project. "Joe Williams Presents Nicole Yarling at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild" wasborn as a result. It also captures a moment in history which can never deduplicated: "Joe Williams Presents..." was to be Joe's final recording.Ms. Yarling realized the valuable gifts given to her. She knows that the bestway to keep these gifts is to share them with others. She applies herknowledge today at Florida Memorial University as an Assistant Professor, andDirector of Popular Music where she recently received the honor of "Teacher ofthe Year" and "Scholar of the Year" in her division. She is also currently fulltimefaculty at the Frost School of Music. As a mentor, she established aconcert series 12 years ago called Jazz Encounters, at radio station WDNA, andruns the eight year old Jazz Education Community Coalition in Miami, hoststhe 12 year old First Friday Jam for the Gold Coast Jazz Society, and workedwith Phil Collins Little Dreamers organization. As an adjudicator/mentor forYoung Arts, she aids in establishing strong artistic community ties. In 2015Nicole was presented the Jazz Hero Award by the Jazz Journalists of Americaand she was recently inducted into the South Florida Jazz Hall of Fame in2016. In 2018, Nicole received a $10,000 Knights Arts Champion award forher work with the Jazz Education Community Coalition. Last year she receivean award as one of the Top African American Educators in South Florida.
