Alilo! Georgian Holiday Caroling Workshop with Zedashe

Streaming live from Sighnaghi, Georgia, join the singers of Zedashe for a mini-concert and online workshop exploring Georgian holiday carols

Renowned Georgian folk singer, folk dancer, and chef Ketevan Mindorashvili, joined by a trio of vocalists from her ensemble Zedashe, present a very special online mini-concert and vocal workshop exploring Georgia&#x27;s rich winter holiday singing traditions.The event will begin with a short performance of winter carols performed by Zedashe. The singers will then teach an exquisite and unusual Alilo (Allelujah) from Guria in Western Georgia. Gurian songs are famous for their wild, angular melodic lines, and surprising interlocking harmonies.This event will be held on Zoom. Song study materials will be shared with participants in a Google Drive folder in the days preceeding the workshop. Pre-registration is required. Singers of all ages, genders, geographies, backgrounds, and levels of experience are welcome to participate.Admission is pay-what-you-can with a suggested donation of $25 per participant. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.This event is dedicated to the fond memory of Anzor Erkomaishvili, Nino Kalandadze, and Larry Gordon, three legendary Georgian folk song-bearers who joined the choir of angels this past year. ABOUT KETEVAN MINDORASHVILI AND ZEDASHEFounder and director of the Zedashe Ensemble, Ketevan (&quot;Keto&quot;) Mindorashvili was born in the eastern Georgian fortress town of Sighnaghi and raised in a traditional singing family. Keto showed a gift for singing since childhood and continued to study music technique extensively in university. She devoted herself to preserving traditions on the brink of disappearance, and has become known as a singer and a teacher of Georgian folk music and dance, particularly the fluid ornamentation of eastern folk songs. She has a deep knowledge of ancient church chant, and is a master of the panduri, the three-stringed lute from the eastern Georgian region of Kakheti. Keto and Zedashe have searched valleys and mountains for ancient polyphony, collecting folk songs and chants, as well as writing her own music within the tradition. Today she hosts students from all over the world in her native Sighnaghi and travels internationally leading tours of Zedashe and teaching workshops. She has appeared on all Zedashe recordings to date, and has participated in numerous tours to the United States, United Kingdom, and throughout Europe. Keto is also a world-renowned chef who&#x27;s recipes can be savored in several of her family-owned restaurants in Georgia and in the cookbook Tasting Georgia.This event is supported, in part, by The National Endowment for the Arts&#x27; Artworks program.
