Saturday, April 19th 12-2pmGeorgetown Ballroom: 5623 Airport Way South, Seattle, WA 98108Tickets: $25 Cake Walk Entry; $15 per roundCake Master: $250 for unlimited Cake Walks Resistance with a side of Cake!Cake Dance is Wa Na Wari’s 21st Century version of a Cake Walk. Cake Walk’s were birthed out of the artistic ingenuity of formerly enslaved Africans, and is where the phrase “take the cake” came from.&nbsp; Cake Dance has Local and National Black dancers performing historic styles of Black dance. This will&nbsp; show an array of self-determined, radical Black dance and offer some history about “cake walking.”&nbsp; Come enjoy and afternoon of dance and cake. How to Cake Walk:Cake Dance is also a cake walk. Participants will purchase a $15 ticket per round, and they will walk around in a number circle to music. When the music stops you stand on the number closest to you and the MC will call out a number. If your number is called you can select a cake from one of many amazing local bakeries. About our performers: Quynn JohnsonQuynn L. Johnson Ed.M. is a multidisciplinary creative whose work lies at the intersection of performing arts and education. Performance highlights include Ayodele Casel and Torya: Diary of a Tap Dancer, A.R.T.;Ayodele Casel: Chasing Magic, The Joyce Theatre; Great Gatsby, The Washington Ballet; Dormeshia: Unsung Sheroes of the 20th Century, Jacob’s Pillow; Zaz: The Big Easy; Latida Negro; Savion Glover’s TiiDii3000 Company. Tour: After Midnight (Soloist), Norweigan Cruise Line. Co-founder of SOLE Defined, International Arts Based Educator and recipient of the John F. Kennedy Center Local Dance Commissioning Project 2020. Education: Harvard University and Howard University. Quynn has designed and implemented arts-based programs in Uganda, South Africa, New York, Iowa, DC, and Michigan impacting 100K+ youth. Gerson Lanza&nbsp;Gerson Lanza "Originally from La Ceiba, Honduras, Gerson discovered tap dance after relocating to New York City in 2001 and quickly developed a passion for the art form. He enrolled at Wadleigh Performing Arts HS and Harlem School of the Arts, where he honed his movement practice. After a fruitful career living in New York City, he has taught and performed across the United States and internationally. His choreographic work at Artist at the Center was highlighted in the New York Times in 2024.Cyrah L. Ward"Cyrah L. Ward (seer-ah) is a scholar of Black dance, critical race theorist, and interdisciplinary performance maker. Deeply rooted in the storytelling tradition, Ward’s work converges Africanist aesthetics within movement and language to transform her art into a vessel for sacred ritual, sociopolitical critique, and Black joy. Her interdisciplinary research involves finding innovative ways to privilege the Black Gaze by activating Black oral traditions and digitized Black Archives. In doing so, her work manifests as embodied performances, spoken word, collage art, and immersive installations." dani tirrelldani tirrell (dani tirrell), recipient of Seattle’s 2019 Mayor's Arts Award, is a Black, Trans Spectrum, Queer choreographer, dancer, and movement guide, known for their deeply impactful work centered on Black identity, community, and storytelling. dani has shared their practice in cities across the U.S., including Detroit, Seattle, Washington D.C., and beyond. Currently, dani serves as the Artistic Director of Central District Forum for Arts &amp; Ideas in Seattle and is the founder and artistic director of The Congregation, a movement-based performance ensemble dedicated to stories from the African Diaspora.Looking ahead,dani will present Elysium: Book II of the Leviticus or Love series in May 2025, while their new work, The Children Were Never Promised a Home on Your Plantation, is in development and will be at the renowned Jacob’s Pillow | Pillow Lab in January 2025.Bakeries:&nbsp;Hood Famous, Gray Sea Pies, PCC, Simply Soulful, Keekadees, Trophy Cupcakes, Shihorina, Macrina, Chef Tarik Abdullah and many more.
