Calling All K-12 Minnesota Educators!

The MMEW is an annual multi-day workshop for educators teaching in K-12 schools. The workshop focuses on the geology, mineral resources, and mining history of Minnesota, led by Minnesota’s leading geologists from academia, government, and industry. It has been held in various locations throughout Minnesota since its inception in 1997, and we are excited to return to Chisholm for the 25th anniversary celebration!

Join us at the Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm to network with other K-12 teachers, learn about the Mesabi Iron Range, receive free teaching materials (including rock & mineral samples!), lesson plan ideas, maps, and other useful resources!

The Full Program is for 2.5 days June 24th - 26th. A certificate for PDHs will be available to each full program attendee.

One Day Only - Can't make the full multi-day workshop but still want to attend? We have a One-Day Only option for $30 early registration and $35 regular. This One-Day Only offering is for workshop activities taking place on Tuesday June 25th. A certificate for PDHs will be available to each one day only attendee.

Lodging

Lodging options in the Chisholm Area are listed on the MMEW website and listed below. Two lodging options are available as an add on with registration on a first come first serve basis.

  • The Chisholm Inn is offering MMEW attendees a special reduced "MMEW" rate to support Minnesota teachers attending. Call the Chisholm Inn for the reduced rate.
  • The Hampton Inn Hibbing has a special rate for MMEW attendees if you register via this link, also found on the MMEW webpage.
  • The Comfort Inn & Suites in nearby Mountain Iron also has a special reduced rate for MMEW attendees if you call.

MMEW group camp tickets at a reduced rate are available as an add-on to your MMEW registration ticket. Camping at the Group Camp is first come first serve for the MMEW group, limited to 20 MMEW tickets. Regular single site camping is available through the Minnesota DNR camping reservation system.

Tomassoni Building located at 624 3rd Street West, Chisholm, just minutes away from the Discovery Center. Limited rooms available exclusively to MMEW K-12 teachers at a rate of $55 total for two nights (checking in 6/24 checking out 6/26). Dinner Outing

On Monday June 24th participants registered for the full workshop program will have an exclusive experience of the Redhead Trail including a guest lecture, guided hike, and an opportunity, for those interested, to view or explore the reclaimed lake by water including canoeing, kayaking and even swimming!

A shuttle will provide transport from the start of the trail to the edge of the lake to those who prefer to take in the views rather than walking the trail or exploring by water. The Redhead Trail is located adjacent to the Discovery Center, and is an award-winning reclamation and recreational highlight of northern Minnesota! Dinner is included with each registration for this evening event.

Organized by

The purpose of the Minnesota Center for Mineral Resource Education (MCMRE) is to promote awareness of the positive contribution that mineral resources make to the Minnesota way of life, principally by supporting teacher education in mineral resources, including their geology, exploration, development, extraction, uses, reclamation, conservation, and economics; and to give support for the development and implementation of curricula for teaching about mineral resources at the K-12 level of education.

MCMRE, a 501c3 organization, was established in 2009 as the successor to the network of volunteers that had very successfully been organizing the Minnesota Minerals Education Workshop since 1997.

MCMRE is committed to sharing good information meant to empower members of our society to participate in wise decision-making for the benefit of all, and is committed to ensuring respect, accountability, and inclusiveness in governance and facilitation of participation. MCMRE volunteers and participants do not discriminate against any person on the basis of color, creed, disability, national origin, public assistance status, race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation in any MCMRE or MMEW activity.
