THE HIDDEN AND IGNORED HISTORY OF RACISM IN CHILD WELFARE: AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION RESOLUTION 606
In 2022, the American Bar Association Commission on Youth at Risk presented a resolution to the House of Delegates calling for all legal professionals to learn about and understand how laws dating back to the country’s founding have led to over surveillance of and underinvestment in Black families and serve as a root cause of the disproportionate involvement of Black parents and children within our juvenile and family courts. It took two years for the Commission to develop Resolution 606 and for it to become ABA policy. Come hear about the developing and passing of Resolution 606, the process of growth they experienced in learning our own shared history, and how we can all use this information to reshape the delivery of legal services and child welfare services throughout the country. We invite you to join us in exploring this important history and deciding where to go next.
