About this event

Join us to celebrate this year's finalists and winners in the Dateline Awards for excellence in local journalism contest. We'll also be inducting three new journalists into our chapter’s Hall of Fame, and awarding the SPJ-DC Distinguished Service in Local Journalism Award to a worthy individual.

The evening starts with a reception and cash bar cocktails at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Dress is business attire.

We are offering all attendees -- whether SPJ member or not -- tickets at the same price. We also are paying some of the fees; your final price will include sales tax. *** Get yours by June 3 to take advantage of this price before it goes up!***

Our Hall of Fame inductees are three veteran Washington journalists. Our Distinguished Service Award honoree also has years of journalism and journalism education experience.

The Hall of Fame inductees are:

Joie Chen, former reporter and anchor for CBS News, CNN and Al Jazeera America, now director of Northwestern University’s Medill programs in Washington, D.C.

to be introduced by Clarence Page, Washington-based syndicated columnist for the Chicago Tribune

John Kelly, the former Washington Post columnist known for his look at Washington's less-famous side, in “John Kelly’s Washington”

to be introduced by Mark Seagraves, general assignment reporter at News4 Washington

Michel Martin, currently a host of NPR’s Morning Edition, previously weekend host of All Things Considered and host of the Consider This Saturday podcast

to be introduced by Steve Taylor, her old friend and former colleague

For Distinguished Service to Journalism:

Jesse J. Holland, associate director at The School of Media & Public Affairs at George Washington University, author of four books, a guest host on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal and former co-host of BBC World Service Radio’s A Home For Black History, and a former Race & Ethnicity reporter at the Associated Press in Washington

FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THESE HONOREES, check their bios on our spjdc.org website.

Expect an exciting evening celebrating the best of the profession and reliving key moments in its recent history through the remarks delivered by each honoree and applauding the work done in 2023 for which the Dateline Awards for excellence are given -- along with making new memories for all honorees and attendees.

You may contact SPJ DC corresponding secretary and dinner chair Amy Fickling at spjdcchapter@gmail.com for ticket information or other questions about the dinner. For any questions about the honorees (other than for the Dateline Awards -- those winners will not be announced ahead of the dinner, but during the dinner), your inquiry will be forwarded from that email address to the Awards chair. A guest list will be at the door. NO tickets are mailed, so keep your receipt from Eventbrite for presentation at the event sign-in. You also should expect to receive several days before the dinner a QR code for Press Club entry, so when prompted, please provide an email address for it to be sent to.
