As a result of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, California’s Department of Insurance created a regulation requiring adjusters who investigate EQ claims to attend specific EQ claims handling training. Attendees who complete this class will earn an earthquake handling accreditation certificate that is valid for three years. The training complies with the EQ Claims Handling curriculum required by the DOI. Open discussion is encouraged on specific questions for personal lines and commercial exposures.

We all know the big one is coming soon. This special EQ training session will make sure you know best practices for handling earthquake claims and documenting the file.

Class Overview

The first part of the training will review California Fair Claim Settlement practice regulations, safety in the field while providing inspections, the various programs designed to assist EQ victims, what to do when a late or supplemental claims arrives alleging EQ damage, determining what kind of expert is needed to assist with the investigation and mediation programs that are available to property owners.T

The second part of the training will include an overview of earthquake science including concepts such as vibration, lateral movement and construction science. This section will also address the effects of earthquakes on various types of structures; Methods of segregating pre-existing damage from earthquake related damage; Strategies for determining the scope of repair; Possible methods of repair vs. replacement; and how experts can assist with adjudicating the loss. The presenter will illustrate all above points through the use of real-life case studies.
