2022 Fall STEMplus: ʻĀina-Informatics Network

'Iolani School Community Science

Come learn about the ʻĀina-Informatics Network and our new Stream eDNA Project: Detecting rare native species in our urban waterways.

Iolani School Sullivan Center

Our urban streams are home to five native species of ʻoʻopu in addition to a handful of endemic invertebrates. Each of these species is amphidromous - they are swept out to sea as larvae where they develop to adulthood, and once again return to the kahawai to spawn. Today, it is not known which streams still carry some of the rarest of these species, some of the upstream ʻoʻopu and the hīhīwai, for example. Using environmental or eDNA techniques, might we detect the trace presence of these rare species along their alahula mai uka i kai?

Our program’s objective is to develop place-based curriculum for ethical genome science that centers on Hawaiʻi’s unique relationships to ‘āina, all while generating real data via a community science approach. These curricula utilize foundational, hands-on laboratory techniques that can be taught out of our mobile genomics lab and highlight real world applications of genome science, such as GMOs, personal genetics, detection of invasive species and the discovery of novel biodiversity. Each project is also designed to engage students in the bioethics dimensions that accompany emerging genomic technologies.

STEMplus was created to help Hawaiʻi public, charter, and independent school teachers of all grade levels connect their classroom to community through Community Science. Through regular gatherings hosted by ʻIolani School, Hawaiʻi educators build a network of like-minded teachers, LEARN from experts, and ENGAGE in a data-collecting community of schools.
