<P>Expert guest presenters from around the country will share concepts that have proven effective in their areas of practice. In between five targeted breakout sessions enjoy networking with each other over lunch then gather in the Loveland Performing Arts Center on the Heritage campus for the keynote address by Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison.</P>

<H2><SPAN>Building Resilience in the Traumatized Adolescent: </SPAN></H2>
<H3><SPAN>Nancy Freitas Lambert, Psy.D. Paradigm San Francisco</SPAN></H3>
<P><SPAN>What do adolescents need in order to function effectively in the world today? </SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN>For children who come from an environment where they were not given the resources they needed to feel safe, their organic, natural developmental process was disrupted and derailed.  What we often see in adolescent’s behavior is a representation of this developmental disruption. Children who grow up in the face of chronic and consistent traumatic experiences are forced to develop certain defensive styles of relation to others. These behaviors are often rooted in self-preservation and contribute to an over-activated central nervous system.  Children need to feel safe enough and calm enough to be given the opportunity to learn how to trust others, society and the world again. They need to feel safe “enough” to develop new styles of relating, and new effective coping skills.</SPAN></P>
<H2><BR><SPAN>Exploring Posttraumatic Growth for Individuals on the Autism Spectrum</SPAN></H2>

<P><SPAN>Individuals with neurological differences perceive and interpret the world differently. These differences may be through heightened sensory inputs, disjointed social experiences, and lack of self-awareness which contribute to an often isolating and traumatic development experience. George Ballew and Neil Wallace explore how brain formation influences development and the consistent trauma faced by individuals with neurological differences. Post-traumatic growth is possible when the treatment process is sensitive to these neurological differences. Best practices for doing so will be discussed as individuals with neurological differences learn the skills to thrive and overcome.</SPAN></P>

<H2><SPAN>Invisible Scars:  Trauma-related physiologic and neuroanatomic changes and their treatment implications</SPAN></H2>
<H3><SPAN>Ray Kotwicki, MD, MPH Skyland Trail</SPAN></H3>
<P><SPAN>While certain types of trauma result in literal scars and wounds, others do not necessarily produce observable injuries.  Nevertheless, many traumas result in significant physiological changes in victims’ stress hormone system regulation, neuroanatomy, and even genetic mutations that may carry important functional and cognitive ramifications.  This discussion will highlight some of these physiological and anatomic changes and correlate them with necessary modifications in therapeutic work with trauma survivors.</SPAN></P>

<H2><SPAN>Triple Threat:  Beyond Dual Diagnosis - Trauma, Invitations to Change and Family Mapping</SPAN></H2>
<H3><SPAN>Louise Stranger, Ed. D, LCSW, CWDF, CIP All About Interventions</SPAN></H3>
<P><SPAN>During this discussion we will identify and describe how clients and families arrive at our practices, explain and discuss SUD, mental health, process disorders and chronic pain as attachment disorders. We’ll extrapolate through case example how trauma, shame, guilt humiliation, grief and loss effect one’s story about themselves. We’ll describe and discuss portraiture as a qualitative method of inquiry to be used with family mapping as a way into story, demonstrate through case example how invitations of change (CIS) are integrated into treatment milieu. </SPAN></P>

<P><SPAN>How can we be committed to using evidence-based treatments to help people with substance use disorders? Using motivational psychology and evidence-based treatments for co-occurring disorders. The presentation will focus on trauma victims showing symptoms of substance use disorders, how motivational interviewing can help and address suicide prevention with military personnel.</SPAN></P>

<P><SPAN>During this interactive 1-hour session presenters are available to address questions and comments families and professionals have had from participating in earlier presentations. </SPAN></P>

<H2><SPAN>Keynote Address: Kayla Harrison </SPAN></H2>
<P><SPAN>Through discipline, tenacity, and the support of others Kayla fought through the pain of sexual abuse transforming herself into a strong, confident, articulate young woman who happens to be a world-class athlete. </SPAN></P>

<DIV><SPAN>Kayla was awarded the 2012 OC Tanner Inspiration Award, The Women’s Sports Foundation’s Wilma Rudolph Courage Award; was named one of Glamour Magazine’s Women of the Year for 2012, Boston Globe Magazine’s Bostonian of the Year, and the Boston Sportswriter’s Association Athlete of the Year. She has been inducted into the New York Athletic Club Hall of Fame and the Middletown High School Hall of Fame.</SPAN></DIV>
