PROGRAMS
Post Conviction Litigation: This presentation will focus on the nuts and bolts of post-conviction litigation, with a focus on cases where there is a likelihood that the defendant is innocent. Jamie will discuss post-conviction discovery rights, the procedural barriers to raising post-conviction claims, and strategies to overcome these barriers.
Financial Planning During a Divorce: This presentation will focus on informing attorneys of how financial planning during a divorce is a key consideration. Topics will include: assets, tax filing status, dependents, debts, property issues and retirement plans.
Warriors Trial Bag: This presentation will summarize about 50-60 cases related to DWI issues. The cases will cover issues related to: reasonable suspicion, checkpoints, probable cause, Rodriguez delays, refusals, breath testing, blood testing, and custodial release issues all related to the crime of DWI.
Changes to Power of Attorney Law: North Carolina's version of the Uniform Power of Attorney Act became effective on January 1, 2018. Because questions of an individual's capacity to transact business on his own, or the authority of his agent to do so on his behalf, can arise in many types of law practices, this program will provide an overview of common issues that different types of practitioners can expect to face under the new law, as well as a summary of key changes from the old law.
Investigations in the Age of GeoSocial Data: The current growth of geosocial data is changing the face of risk management and investigations. Learn what geosocial data is, and exactly how this type of information is used to investigate insurance claims of all kinds. Understand how to gain eye-opening insight into accidents, site security, workplace harassment and high exposure incidents, by locating social media photographs, videos, and posts at specific locations and times anywhere in the world. This session utilizes real life case examples to demonstrate the impact of this new technology in the realm of risk management, law and insurance. The session also shows how evidence can be uncovered and leveraged in a variety of scenarios. Privacy and legal issues, as well as preserving, authenticating and presenting this type of cyber evidence will also be discussed. Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of the best investigative practices required for a successful geosocial investigation and exactly how to add this new information to their wide range of skills.
BIOGRAPHIES
Jamie Lau is an associate clinical professor of law, supervising attorney for the Duke Law Wrongful Convictions Clinic, and faculty adviser to the Innocence Project. Lau also co-teaches a seminar on wrongful conviction. tau's law practice includes representing inmates asserting innocence in state and federal court. He has played a role in several exonerations, including that of Wrongful Convictions Clinic client Howard Dudley in May 2016, after nearly 24 years of wrongful incarceration. Jamie earned his JD, cum laude, from Duke Law School. He has a BA in Economics, with distinction, from the University of California, Berkeley.
Dollie Halford is a Certified Financial Planner. Dollie works with high net worth individuals i n Asheville and Hendersonville and helps them take a comprehensive and disciplined approach to managing their wealth and investments. Dollie specializes in working with divorcee's in understanding the financial aspects of divorce and how to discover financial peace of mind for the future. She graduated summa cum laude from Western Carolina University with a B.A. in business administration, and she also holds her Certified Financial Planner™ designation.
James Minick is a member of the National College for DUI Defense and named to Super Lawyers Rising Stars in 2018. He focuses his legal practice on representing people charged with DWI. James writes and speaks regularly on the topic of DWI. James also enjoys writing about such topics as the business of law, creating a successful culture at the office, and legal marketing.
Heather Whitaker Goldstein focuses on incapacity planning, client advocacy and litigation in a wide variety of situations where an elderly person is vulnerable to exploitation. She assists clients with drafting powers of attorney, incompetency and guardianship proceedings, will contests, trust modifications, estate-related litigation, and claims by and against individuals who are serving as executor, trustee, or agent under a power of attorney. 
Brian Lawler assists clients in identifying resources and developing plans to enable them to live long, healthy, and active lives. Brian focuses his practice on elder law, estate planning and administration, incapacity planning and guardianships, and working with adults and children with disabilities. Using a variety of planning tools, Brian helps clients who might otherwise be disqualified from public assistance protect and preserve their assets to supplement care provided by Medicaid, Social Security, and the Veterans Administration.
Stephen Roper is the Investigative Consultant for DigiStream Investigations in the Carolinas area. Prior to that he was the Senior Intelligence Specialist of DigiStream’s Intelligence Division, overseeing background, social media, medical, and accident scene investigations nationally. Stephen has completed over 1,000 digital investigations, including pre-employment screenings for public agencies and international, multi-jurisdictional investigations and is a licensed Private Investigator. Prior to DigiStream, Stephen was a reporter for the Shenzhen Daily in Shenzhen, China as well as an instructor at the prestigious Bao’an Zhong Xue Academy. He graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a double major in English and Media Writing.
