The American Academy of Political and Social Science, one of the nation’s oldest learned societies, is dedicated to the use of social science to address important social problems.For over a century, our flagship journal,The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, has brought together public officials and scholars from across the disciplines to tackle issues ranging from racial inequality and intractable poverty to the threat of nuclear terrorism.  Today, through conferences and symposia, podcast interviews with leading social scientists, and the annual induction of Academy Fellows and presentation of the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Prize, the Academy is dedicated to bridging the gap between academic research and the formation of public policy. http://www.aapss.org

WHAT: The 2017 Moynihan Lecture, presented by Professor Alan Krueger: "Independent Workers: What Role for Public Policy?"
U.S. Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) will introduce Professor Krueger. Sen. Warner has taken an active role in addressing the issues around an "on-demand" economy in Congress.

While U.S. unemployment numbers are low, many of the jobs created over the past decade aren't traditional or stable. These jobs are known as part of the "gig" economy: jobs ranging from driving an Uber to renting out a room to performing on-demand errands, among other. 
Professor Krueger's work focuses on how the economy is affected by these alternative work arrangements and what politicians and policymakers can do to support this growing segment of the American workforce. Senator Mark Warner, who will introduce Professor Krueger, is especially concerned about the lack of a safety net for these workers. 
Professor Krueger's recently released working paper, "<A HREF="http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=x8oyjl9ab.0.0.7nvgogkab.0&id=preview&r=3&p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bostonfed.org%2F-%2Fmedia%2FDocuments%2Feconomic%2Fconf%2Fgreat-recovery-2016%2FAlan-B-Krueger.pdf" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Where Have All the Workers Gone?</A>", examines the movements and trends of labor force participation in the United States, which reached a near 40-year low of 62.4 percent in September 2015. 
About the Moynihan Prize Recipient: Mr. Krueger is the Bendheim Professor of Economics and Public Policy at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs and director of Princeton's Survey Research Center. He served as chairman of President Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers and as a member of his cabinet from November 2011 to August 2013.
