Bard Math Circle

<H2>AMC 10/12 Contests at Bard College</H2>
The Bard Math Circle is proud to offer the AMC 10/12 B exams on Wednesday, February 15, 2017. These contests are intended to challenge high school students with accessible mathematical concepts, but at a level that is above and beyond what is typically encountered in the school curriculum.
This activity is offered at no cost, but due to limited space, registration is required in advance. Parents or guardians must agree to a liability waiver and photo release for their child to participate.
Before the contest, join us for AMC 10/12 prep sessions, led by Bard undergraduate math majors. Sessions will be held on Saturday February 4th and on Sunday, February 12th from 1 - 4 PM in RKC (room TBA). 
The registration table will open at 4:00pm, and we will start the contest promptly at 4:30pm. Following the contest, participants will be treated to pizza, and an engaging mathematics talk by a Bard Math professor. The event will end by 7pm.
Please register early, as we expect the event to fill up. If you register, but your plans change, please cancel your registration, or let us know so that we can cancel for you.

<H2>About AMC 10/12</H2>
The AMC 10 is a 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examination in secondary school mathematics containing problems which can be understood and solved with algebra and geometry concepts. The AMC 12 is a 25-question, 75-minute, multiple choice examination in secondary school mathematics containing problems which can be understood and solved with pre-calculus concepts. Two different versions of the contests are given a week apart in February. Each AMC 10 and AMC 12 contest contains about 12 of the same math problems.
 
<H2>Purpose of the AMC 10/12</H2>
The main purpose of the AMC 10/12 is to spur interest in mathematics and to develop talent through the excitement of solving challenging problems in a timed multiple-choice format. The problems range from the very easy to the extremely difficult. Students who participate in the AMC 10/12 should find that most of the problems are challenging but within their grasp. The contest is intended for everyone from the average student at a typical school who enjoys mathematics to the very best student at the most special school.
A special purpose of the AMC 10/12 is to help identify those few students with truly exceptional mathematics talent. Students who are among the very best deserve some indication of how they stand relative to other students in the country and around the world. The AMC 10/12 provides one such indication. The AMC 10/12 is the first in a series of examinations (followed in the United States by the American Invitational Examination and the USA Mathematical Olympiad) that culminate in participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad, the most prestigious and difficult secondary mathematics examination in the world. In this way the very best young mathematicians are recognized, encouraged and developed. Another valuable comparison students can make is between their own level of achievement and their levels in previous years. In particular, they are encouraged to begin taking the contests early in their mathematics studies and to look back with pride each year on how they have learned to answer questions that they could not have answered previously.
 
About the Bard Math Circle
The Bard Math Circle is a mathematics enrichment program for upper elementary and middle school students, families, and teachers. We invite students and teachers to the Bard campus as well as traveling to local libraries and schools to promote a partnership between the college and the surrounding community. Activities such as games, puzzles, and problem sets are presented to participants in an enthusiastic and encouraging manner, allowing students, educators, and volunteers to explore mathematics outside of the typical school curriculum. Both creative and hands-on approaches and teamwork are highly encouraged, introducing a stimulating community aspect to a subject often thought to be dull and isolating. The Bard Math Circle bridges the gap between academic and recreational mathematics; critical thinking skills learned here are applicable both at school and in general.
