2016 Teachers Workshop

The Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, host of the Delaware Estuary Program, leads collaborative, science–based efforts to improve the Delaware River and Bay, which covers portions of Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.The Partnership for the Delaware Estuary works to restore the health of the Delaware River and Bay—an environment on which millions of people, wildlife, and plants depend. With an emphasis on science and collaboration and a focus on the entire Estuary, we are uniquely positioned to develop and implement programs that are improving the Estuary environment to levels not seen in many decades. Working with and through the Partnership, concerned individuals, businesses, and governments can amplify their impact on protecting a natural resource at the center of our region’s quality of life.

<H3 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Where: </SPAN>Schuylkill and Berks County</H3>
<H3 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Time: </SPAN><SPAN>9am – 4:30pm</SPAN></H3>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal"> While we often think of waters in the cities being polluted, but the water in the rural areas are polluted as well. We will explore this area of Pennsylvania where acid mine drainage is a problem. We will visit streams impacted in addition to visiting a site that is remediating the past and cleaning our waters. The day will finish with a visit to a working farm to see how they lessen their impacts on our waterways.</P>

<H3 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>When: </SPAN>Tuesday, July 19, 2016</H3>
<H3 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Where: </SPAN>Fairmount Water Works, <I>Philadelphia PA</I></H3>
<H3 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Time: </SPAN><SPAN>8:45am – 4:00pm</SPAN></H3>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal">This day will focus on the complete process of how we use water in the city. Tours may include the wastewater treatment plant as well as where the water is before we drink it. We will also tour the Fairmount Water Works to learn the history of water in the city of Philadelphia. After exploring the center we will discuss ways to incorporate water into your classroom using the <I>Understanding the Urban Watershed </I><I>curriculum</I>.</P>

<H2 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>WOW! Workshop and Wetland exploration</SPAN></H2>
<H3 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>When: </SPAN>Wednesday, July 20, 2016</H3>
<H3 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Where: </SPAN>The Aquatic Resources Education Center, <I>Smyrna DE </I></H3>
<H3 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Time: </SPAN><SPAN>9am – 4pm</SPAN></H3>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN></SPAN> Long field trips to destinations are not always feasible, so this workshop offers techniques to connect your students with wetlands and natural spaces no matter the limitations.  We will explore ways to engage students outdoors as well as ways to incorporate wetland activities while indoors. During the Workshop we will explore the Wetlands and see everything that AREC has to offer. All participants will receive the <I>WOW! Wonders of Wetlands</I>curriculum.</P>

<H2 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Citizen Scientist – You & Your Students too</SPAN></H2>
<H3 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>When: </SPAN>Thursday, July 21, 2016</H3>
<H3 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Where: </SPAN>Center for the Aquatic Sciences, <I>Camden NJ</I></H3>
<H3 CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Time: </SPAN><SPAN>9am – 4:30pm</SPAN></H3>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal">There are so many ways that we all can be citizen scientists. This workshop will explore the different ways you and your students can become one! The morning will start with learning about the Center for Aquatic Science’s Stream Steward program and how you can start a similar program. Then we will go head to Palmyra Cove Nature Park where we will do a mussel survey in the Delaware River learning not only how to find mussels but also why they are important. The day will end with a GLOBE Teacher Workshop by the staff at Palmyra Cove.</P>
