2016 NALSA Symposium

The NALSA Chapter at the University of South Dakota School of Law is excited to announce the 14th Bi-ennial Indian Law Symposium. The title of this year’s event is, "Indian Child Welfare Act: Old and New Challenges." We will open the symposium at 12p.m., Wednesday, March 30th with the Charles Dillion keynote address, provided by the Honorable Jill Tompkins, Chief Justice & and Director of the Penobscot Indian Nation Judicial System. The symposium will continue on that afternoon, and will focus on the following topic: 
1)Session One: Oglala Sioux Tribe v. Van Hunnik – During the first session, we will be discussing this major ICWA decision, which was issued by the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota in 2015.  Panelists will include attorneys Dana Hanna and Stephen Pevar, who represented the plaintiffs in this case. 
The Symposium will pick up the following day starting with Session Two at 9am CST in the courtroom. 
2) Session Two – During the second session, we will consider the recently released BIA Guidelines regarding the application of ICWA. Panelists will include BIA Regional Director Danelle Daugherty, Lakota Peoples Law Project's Chase Iron Eyes, and adoption attorney Mark Fiddler. 
3) Session Three – During the third session, we will focus on the 2013 Supreme Court decision, Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl. Panelists will include Professor Frank Pommersheim (University of South Dakota School of Law), Professor Wenona Singel (Michigan State University College of Law), Professor Addie Rolnick (UNLV Boyd College of Law), and attorney Mark Fiddler, who represented the adoptive couple in this case. 
Throughout the event, NALSA will host an art show within the law school and feature book signings for our distinguished participating law scholars, Frank Pommersheim and Stephen Pevar.
