Our next lecture will focus on classical calligraphy, but our guest’s approach is anything but traditional. Karina Meister has spent decades pushing the boundaries of legibility and letterforms, combining classical calligraphic techniques with unconventional materials and experimental methods.
Karina was enthusiastically recommended to us by one of our regular visitors. Since then, we’ve been in touch, and she has joined us for several of our evenings. We’re excited to take a closer look at her work, with our newest Letterspace member, Nóra Békés, interviewing her about her influences, creative process, and artistic journey.

Karina Meister (Salzburg, 1945) lives and works in Amsterdam-Oost. She came to the Netherlands in 1973 to study at the Royal academy of arts & design at ’s Hertogenbosch and has since been active as a lettering and visual artist, undertaking commissions and creating independent work. Over the last two decades, she has broadened her field of interest to include other scripts, such as Arabic and Hebrew as well as other fields of the visual arts. For many years, she taught at art academies and led workshops in many countries. She has participated in founding the specialist journal ‘Scriptores’ and was member of the editing committee. She has lived in Amsterdam-Oost since 1991, where she designed two art projects in the public domain. Now she takes regularly part in local art activities.

The lettering and book artist Karina Meister takes stock after more than half a century in the profession. She gained some recognition also outside the world of calligraphy following the publication of ‘Kalligrafie, een persoonlijke visie’ (1989), but that seems to have faded again today. Her free style, which was not commonplace at the time, is very much in line with contemporary developments in freestyle lettering arts and experimental typography. In this lecture, Karina provides an overview of her work and the evolution of her professional practice.
