Joseph Samuel Bloch: The Maverick Rabbi, 1850-1923
An event commemorating the life and works of one of the most interesting and unique Rabbis in Vienna's history.
Born into poverty in Galicia in 1850, Rabbi Joseph Samuel Bloch became a fierce fighter against antisemitism, a passionate defender of workers rights, and a strong advocate for inter-religious and inter-ethnic dialogue and cooperation. He served as the Rabbi of the Jewish community in Floridsdorf, became a member of the Austrian parliament, defeated Jew-haters in court, wrote dozens of publications, co-edited a journal, and coordinated relief for Jewish refugees arriving in Vienna during the First World War.
On Rabbi Bloch's 176th birthday, we will commemorate his memory with a short presentation at Yung Yidish Wien on 21 November, 2026 at 18:00. The presentation will be made partly English, partly in German - small vegetarian refreshments will be provided.
