An Art Institute In Chicago: An Exhibition Curated by Takashi Shallow
When the big institutions fade, the underground keeps building. An exhibition curated by Takashi Shallow at Evoke Gallery.
An Art Institute in Chicago:
a future where all that remains are remnants of cherished works,
like a post-war "cargo cult", refabricating institutions using whatever's available,
a speculation born in an era when funding for the already precarious arts is gutted.
I witness underground art thrive in its own way during times like these. Its members appear exceptionally devoted to the cause, building solidarity in locations where security has been stripped away.
Large art institutions shrink, small arts businesses collapse, and underground art grows.
Such seems to be the bittersweet economics of the fine arts during declines.
This exhibition absorbs the aboveground into the underground. Art always exists as long as people exist. I wonder if hegemonic institutions will survive this apocalypse.
