Join us at The CAMP Gallery Saturday, Nov 7th from 2-4pm for a unique Fiber Letter workshop with exhibiting artist Andrea Cardenal
As part of the 8th edition of our annual fiber show 52 Women Pulling at the Threads of Social Discourse & a Guest: The Epistle our gallery is launching a series of Artist Talks and Workshops lead by our Miami based exhibiting artists.
Our second event of this series is with artist Andrea Cardenal, who will conduct a Fiber Letter stitching workshop on Saturday, November 7th from 2-4pm. In this workshop participants choose two pieces of fabric. On one, they identify and stitch something they have inherited and want to carry forward: creativity, humor, faith, courage, tenderness, language, tradition, a recipe, a way of caring. On the other, they identify something they do not want to continue carrying: an expectation, fear, silence, perfectionism, shame, or pattern.
Rather than requiring disclosure, these can be represented entirely through color, knotting, tearing, layering, symbolism and abstract marks. The "carry" fabric is stitched into a sort of pouch; the other can be altered, unraveled, obscured, or physically transformed. Participants then write a short letter to themselves one year, five years, or ten years from now, responding to prompts such as: What do I hope you have protected? What do I hope you have released? What do I want you to remember about who you are today? They can transform the letter into a small textile artwork using fiber based materials which will be provided by the gallery.
