Olivier Jambois improvises on electric guitar with JULM, an AI drummer that responds in real time. Free at BMAT, Barcelona.
A guitarist. An AI drummer. A live improvisation.
What happens when a language model becomes a musical partner?
For the next Barcelona AI Music Meetup, Olivier Jambois performs Tokens & Strings with JULM — Jam Using a Large Language Model — a system he developed that listens to his electric guitar and answers with drum patterns in real time.
JULM runs a language model locally on the computer to compose the patterns. A neural sound engine, RAVE, turns them into sound.
The performance explores more than a technical question. Olivier approaches JULM as another improviser, following its own logic and responding in ways he cannot fully control or predict. The system perceives the guitar through tokenized audio descriptors and interprets them through a model shaped by language.
Tokens & Strings brings these two ways of understanding music into the same performance.
Who is it for?
Musicians, improvisers, producers, creative coders, researchers, and curious listeners. You don't need to understand the code to come and listen.
