East Texas bluesman EJ Mathews learned slide guitar from his grandfather Zan, a Georgia bluesman who played with a pocket knife and told him to always be original. Raised in Cass County near the Louisiana line, he built a swampy, backwoods sound that Living Blues magazine spotlighted in its Breaking Out feature in 2017.

Albums like King of the Barnyard and I Didn't Choose the Boogie, The Boogie Chose Me carried his boogie from Dallas blues festivals, where he shared bills with Lucky Peterson, to the Lucerne Blues Festival in Switzerland. It is one Sunday show only, with a growl fans compare to Howlin' Wolf.
