Making Presence Visible: A “book club” Conversation

Making Presence Visible: A “book club” Conversation

Overview

Join the Georgetown University Art Galleries for an intimate conversation amongst the exhibition, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Look Alive.

Join the Georgetown University Art Galleries on Wednesday, November 18th for an intimate “book club” conversation amongst the exhibition, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Look Alive. Led by Professor Andrea Gallelli Huezo of Georgetown’s Department of Art and Art History, this casual conversation will draw from two sources that inspired the exhibition: Adolfo Bioy Casares’ 1940 Argentinian novella, The Invention of Morel, and the 1960 Mexican supernatural drama, Macario. Across the literature and film inspirations and in Look Alive, themes of memory, recording, memento mori, and more prompt us to consider what it means to be present, visible, and ultimately human.

Linked below is a complete digital copy of The Invention of Morel and Macario in full length with English subtitles. Guests are encouraged to peruse both before the program, but it is not required. The evening’s discussion will be accessible to all audiences regardless of familiarity with the artwork, exhibition, or source materials.

Read: The Invention of Morel

Watch: Macario

The conversation will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.

Guests of the program will have the option to respond to the artwork, film and literature references, or conversation during the discussion and reception portions of the program. Reflection cards will be available, as well as a dedicated online submission for longer-form responses. If inspiration from the evening lingers, we encourage you to submit a long-form rhetorical or artistic response to the program following its conclusion. Select responses will be featured across the Georgetown University Art Galleries’ and the Lannan Center’s websites and social media pages.

Please note that guests will be encouraged to sit on the floor beneath the installation, Pulse Map, in our de la Cruz Gallery. Limited accessible seating will be available and reserved.

This program is presented in partnership with Georgetown University’s Lannan Center for Poetics and Social Practice
