Monthly Book | Visitors in Our Village
Written by Park Hye-sun · Illustrated by Lee Su-yeon
This October, we invite the creators of <Visitors in Our Village (우리 마을에 온 손님)> to KKC, in collaboration with KBBY (Korean Board on Books for Young People).
On Jeju Island, homes traditionally have no doors. Instead, a jeongnang gate made of a few wooden poles tells visitors whether someone is home. In this warm picture book, a family of rabbits slowly opens their hearts, one pole at a time, to the animals who come knocking.
🔸 Picture Book Reading & Talk
The authors introduce the story and Jeju’s jeongnang gate, and invite children to think about how it feels to open up to someone new, and how it feels to be the newcomer.
🔸 Animal Mask Workshop
Each child draws and makes their own mask of the rabbits or one of the visiting animals.
🔸 Opening the Gate Together
Wearing their masks, the children cut the ribbons of a jeongnang gate handmade by the authors and step through it together, just like the visitors in the story.
