Were There Witches In The West of Scotland?
Discover the dark reality of Scotland’s witch trials, popular myths and uncover who was accused, why, and whether witches really exist
Title: Were There Witches In The West of Scotland?
Speaker: Lorraine Murray, Historian and Archivist
Between 1563 and 1736, witchcraft was a capital offence in Scotland. While Edinburgh and the Lothians saw the highest numbers of accusations, the West of Scotland followed closely behind. This talk aims to debunk modern pop-culture myths such as broomsticks, cauldrons and pointy hats to reveal a much darker reality of what was really going on locally and if witches really existed.
Key audience takeaways
- Belief in the magical world and witches was commonplace
- Witchcraft was a capital crime
