🧠 Lecture: "Africa's Disappearing Rainforest: Findings from the Field"
🎤 Speaker: Professor Ravinder Sehgal
Join us for a compelling evening as Professor Ravinder Sehgal, biologist and National Geographic Explorer, takes us deep into the rapidly changing rainforests of Central Africa. Drawing on more than two decades of fieldwork in Cameroon, he follows birds and disease-carrying mosquitoes from intact rainforest into newly cleared land and vast palm oil plantations to uncover what really happens after the trees come down.
Sehgal and his team are revealing how deforestation reshapes entire ecological communities and may open new pathways for infectious diseases to spread. Through vivid stories and images from the field, you’ll explore how transforming the natural world also transforms the ecology of disease—far beyond the forests of Africa.
Professor Sehgal teaches parasitology and emerging infectious diseases at San Francisco State University, focusing on avian malaria, deforestation, and climate change. With a PhD from UCSF, he uses cutting-edge molecular tools to answer urgent questions about disease emergence and conservation.
