🧠 Lecture: "Beyond Charts and Graphs: Turning Data into Art"

🎤 Speaker: Dr. Gregory J. Matthews

Join us for a captivating evening as Dr. Gregory J. Matthews reimagines what’s possible when data and creativity collide. In “Beyond Data Viz: Data Art,” Dr. Matthews explores how data can move beyond charts and graphs to become a powerful medium for artistic expression.

Tracing a path from W. E. B. Du Bois and early computer-generated art to contemporary artists working with personal data, weather, music, surveillance, genetics, and AI, this talk situates data art in the broader history of art and technology. You’ll discover how data visualization focuses on communicating information, while data art can provoke questions, spark emotion, and invite entirely new ways of seeing the world around us.

Drawing on examples from leading artists as well as his own work, Dr. Matthews demonstrates the many ways data can be transformed into compelling visual and experiential forms. As data becomes ever more embedded in daily life, he argues that statisticians and data professionals have an opportunity not only to inform, but also to inspire.
