Art Fwd: Trenton Doyle Hancock

Art Fwd: Trenton Doyle Hancock

Overview

.

Join artist Trenton Doyle Hancock for an in-depth exploration of his varied career and current projects. Inspired by the world-building of comics, Hancock’s work iterates over time through the investigation of character, story, and symbols.

Co-presented with the UW School of Art + Art History + Design, Hancock will address his use of popular culture, narrative, and autobiography to subvert cultural tropes and national mythologies. A Q&A with the audience will follow the talk.

Bio

For over two decades, Trenton Doyle Hancock has been constructing his own fantastical narrative that continues to develop and inform his prolific artistic output. Part fictional, part autobiographical, Hancock’s work pulls from his own personal experience, art historical canon, comics and superheroes, pulp fiction, and myriad pop culture references, resulting in a complex amalgamation of characters and plots possessing universal concepts of light and dark, good and evil, and all the grey in between.

Hancock’s work is in the permanent collections of institutions including the Akron Art Museum, Akron, OH; Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX; Detroit Institute of Art, Detroit, MI; Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis, TN; Menil Collection, Houston, TX; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; il Museo di arte moderna e contemporanea, Trento, Italy; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Fort Worth, TX; Morgan Library & Museum, New York, NY; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY; Syracuse University Art Museum, Syracuse, NY; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY.
